CMXCIX

Band:SURVIVORS ZERO
Album:CMXCIX
Label:Cobra
Format:CD
Genre:Death Metal

Finland’s most recent but yet experienced death metal-fivesome SURVIVORS ZERO is a bit of a paradox. This band would have had all the potential to become just one more side project of some legendary characters in Finnish metal scene. But they ruined it big time. This band really IS something. Their debut album CMXCIX makes us wonder how can so ugly and smelly group sound so damned fresh and furious. In Finland they have this thing called Quality!

THE DOWNFALL

Band:DOUBTS CAST SHADOWS
Album:THE DOWNFALL
Label:Enter The Arena
Format:CD
Genre:Metal

DOUBTS CAST SHADOWS formed in August 2006 and are already securing some of the biggest shows Scotland has to offer. The band are growing from strength to strength within the Scottish scene and with the onstage energy of the likes of I Killed The Prom Queen and The Dillenger Escape Plan, they never disappoint. Already have Worldwide Management, Agents and Record Labels trying to get the band signed before they hit the big stages. DOUBTS CAST SHADOWS already have a debut full length, self recorded and produced album available digitally worldwide. With several high profile tours lined up for later in the year with the likes of “Romeo Must Die” and “Able Is Dying”. With an average age of 21 the band have a good future, massive backing and most importantly of all, the songs to push them far.

AURELIA

Band:SANCTUS NEX
Album:AURELIA
Label:ATMF
Format:CD
Genre:Black Metal

The Coldness can be manifested into different forms in its timeless truth, U.K. based Sanctus Nex are the modern black metal wanderers, their harmonic and disharmonic tunes a current of perception. A trip into usual and unusual shadings starts there, where Black metal is a constant recall but a departure point to develop a new visionary and evocative journey. The traditional black metal instruments are just a gateway to depart from the mortal, the vision is luckily, far beyond… Sanctus Nex are the feverish mood of introspection of Deathspell Omega detached from the Judeo-Christian paradigm walking a different occult path, drenched into the heritage of their island: in pursuit of Albion.

EINSAMKEIT

Band:SEMEN DATURA
Album:EINSAMKEIT
Label:ATMF
Format:CD
Genre:Black Metal

Black Metal as a renewed weapon can overcome the time passing by, shaped to infect and rage the rotten body of humanity with hateful pride. Semen Datura is the further demonstration of the great time that the German scene is living, performing their most impressive album to date, where personality and skilful songwriting is transcended into a pure form of darkness evocation. Semen Datura music accrue to field that can be associated to bands like Secrets of the Moon, Deathspell Omega, investigating on the deepest corners of the decayed human being.

ARGUS

Band:ARGUS
Album:ARGUS
Label:Shadow Kingdom
Format:CD
Genre:Stoner/Doom/Occult/Sludge Metal

With those of you familiar with Butch era PENANCE (USA Classic Doom), you already know how great his vocals are and those of you who aren’t will learn soon. ARGUS, a new and hungry band from the USA are very well versed with the Maryland Doom Metal and Epic Heavy Metal scene. They released a very well written Demo in 2007 on John Brenner’s Bland Hand Records as a download. For those of you that loved the Demo like I did, this is what you would expect their full length to sound and then some! THE LORD WEIRD SLOUGH FEG fans are going to go absolutely nuts over this album for the sheer volume of twin axe guitar shredding alone!! There are a lot of catchy, layered riffs on top of many hooks and sing a long choruses. On top of all these well-written Epic songs, there are TROUBLEeque Doom Metal break downs to die for feathered throughout the album. Shall I say “instant classic”? That’s for you to decide. Look for them to release a 10” EP on one of my favorite labels, The Miskatonic Foundation in the near future as well.

SINEWS OF ANGUISH

Band:ALTAR OF OBLIVION
Album:SINEWS OF ANGUISH
Label:Shadow Kingdom
Format:CD
Genre:Stoner/Doom/Occult/Sludge Metal

A brand new Epic Heavy Metal band with Doom touches has emerged from the great Denmark. I received their Demo in 2007 and was blown away by the potential this band had. Martin (guitarist/songwriter) has a really unique riffing style that I love. The riffs are really catchy, heavy, and choppy (for lack of a better word). When you finally get used to his guitar playing you’ll find out it’s a signature sound that he developed. The combination of the Epic styled songwriting with some really subtle Doom-y sections mixed with the very young, talented, and uniquely distinct Mik on vocals puts this band to the top of the Epic Heavy/Doom metal scene. If you liked the demo at all (by the way “Wrapped In Ruins” is again featured on this new album) the new album is definitely were you would have wanted the band to be by this time because the songwriting has exceeded the expectation. This album is a full-on conceptual, emotional trip about the pain, suffering, and horrors of war. With that in mind, expect nothing but crushing riffs filled with sorrow, despair, and with powerful vocals with so much emotion, depending on your mood might bring a tear to your eye. ALTAR OF OBLIVION are keeping the Epic Doom torch a flame that was started by the great and well respected bands like CANDLEMASS, SOLSTICE, SOLITUDE AETURNUS, REVELATION, TROUBLE, etc.

I HAVE RETURNED

Band:IRON MAN
Album:I HAVE RETURNED
Label:Shadow Kingdom
Format:CD
Genre:Stoner/Doom/Occult/Sludge Metal

Iron Man's guitar player/song writer Al Morris III has been writing the most savage/heaviest sounding guitar riffs for over 2 decades now! I cannot stress enough to Heavy Metal fans out there that if you haven't heard Iron Man, find something FAST! You're missing out on some of the most mind-bending groove-laden (Maryland) Doom metal around. It's a shame they never got the recognition they deserve, yet! I'm hoping to help change that for them for their forthcoming album "I Have Returned". I've listened to this album a million times already and I can firmly tell everyone this is the very best underground recording I've ever heard on an independant label. This recording sounds like it should be on a major label and I didn't even mention the superior songwriting yet! The songs are very well written and catchy, I'm convinced there's not a stale riff in Al Morris's soul! The man is a guitar god!! Louis is a top-notch bass player, Dex's drums are thunderous and just about as balanced as it gets, and Joe's vocal performance is far beyond my expectation. I'm incredibly honored the band and their manager had faith in me to release their album and it's going to be a pleasure to read, hear, and see the reactions of metal fans far and wide with this release. I think this could have a MAJOR impact on the Heavy Metal scene in 2009.

EXHUMATION

Band:DEATH MASK
Album:EXHUMATION
Label:Shadow Kingdom
Format:CD
Genre:Stoner/Doom/Occult/Sludge Metal

Deep beneath the Maryland Doom Metal scene in the mid to late 80’s DEATH MASK emerged for a short time period. They hardly played that much and went unknown to virtually many Doom Metal collectors because were never able to get this because it was only available as a 6 track demo known as “The Beginning”, and it probably didn’t get too far outside the Maryland area (I assume). This is a unique band to say the least, but also a very magical sounding band where there are some moments in the music where your jaw will just drop to the sheer innovativeness of the way they put these riffs and songs together. Tom (the guitar player) plays some of the sickest riffs I’ve ever heard. Some of the stuff this guy comes up with is out of this world. Some of the songs they put together have like 5-7 amazing riffs in one song whereas a lot of bands rely on 1 or 2 good riffs to carry out a song (which isn’t a bad thing either). I hear a ton of ANGEL WITCH, CELTIC FROST, DREAM DEATH, TROUBLE in their darker / doom-y sounds and in their faster thrash-y parts, there’s a heavy VENOM, MOTORHEAD vibe. In short they’re best described as a ½ Doom Metal, ½ Thrash Metal band with amazing break downs. The vocals are an acquired taste like a wasted VENOM/MOTORHEAD-ish sound, but one thing’s for sure, this band is the definition of HEAVY!

LAST VINYL BEFORE DOOMSDAY

Band:WORSHIP
Album:LAST VINYL BEFORE DOOMSDAY
Label:Noiseville
Format:LP
Genre:Stoner/Doom/Occult/Sludge Metal

In 1999, two doom metal freaks recorded a demo for a band they started called Worship. The demo got around and was shortly after released by Painiac Records in an edition of 400 LP’s. With this release came what many consider today, one of the greatest doom metal releases, ever. It is also cited as the first Funeral Doom albums. To celebrate the 10th Anniversary of this classic metal album that has been out of print for ages on vinyl, comes this limited edition press album. The album is an edition of 666 copies, pressed on grey marble colored vinyl, in a redesigned LP cover with an inner sleeve.

SINISTER REALM

Band:SINISTER REALM
Album:SINISTER REALM
Label:Shadow Kingdom
Format:CD
Genre:Stoner/Doom/Occult/Sludge Metal

Early 80’s styled Heavy / Doom Metal was formed by John Gaffney after his departure from PALE DIVINE. After leaving PALE DIVINE he asked Darin McCloskey to play drums. This new band is from the USA taking influences from the early 80’s Heavy Metal scene that consisted of a variety of bands like JUDAS PRIEST, IRON MADIEN, BLACK SABBATH, DIO, CANDLEMASS, OZ, etc. The album is very catchy with well written, memorable songs, with catchy chorus lines provided by a very talented vocalist, Alex Kristof; his influences are in the league of Dio, Halford, Dickinson. While the music is deeply rooted in the 80's Heavy and Doom scene, it comes down to the arrangement of the songwriting which in itself lies the unique part of SINISTER REALM. Their style is very natural from the music they grew up on and the hooks on this album are to die for! Once this album is digested, you will definitely hear they have developed a sound and technique of their own. So sit back, relax, and “Enter The Sinister Realm”.

BLACK SANCTUARY

Band:GENOCIDE (Nippon)
Album:BLACK SANCTUARY
Label:Shadow Kingdom
Format:CD
Genre:Stoner/Doom/Occult/Sludge Metal

To keep it simple this re-issue is for all the die-hard MERCYFUL FATE fans out there. There are very few vocalists in the world that have what I like to call an acrobatic ability. When I think of some of the best vocalists out there with that ability there are 3 names that spring to mind; King Diamond, which we all know, Jonathon Stewart (from SLAUTER XSTROYES and ENERGY VAMPIRES), which some of us know, and the guy in this band (GENOCIDE (Nippon), Toshihiro Takeuchi. Talk about dynamics, this guy has it all; melodic, imagination, crazy, high falsetto, and he does it in English and Japanese in the same song. That’s not all this band is good for though. The guitar players here are unbelievable! They’ve got an amazing style like Denner and Shermann once had back in the early MERCYFUL FATE days and a lot of their sound has a Doomy feel to it also. This is one of the very best hidden gems in all of Japan and I can strongly say that this is top 1-5 records (depending on my mood) of all-time that came out of that country. This re-issue will include re-issue artwork requested by the band and I can honestly say it’s one of the best Japanese looking metal album cover I’ve seen to this day. A big thank you goes out to Nicola Solieri for providing this amazing cover. Don’t worry nerds, I’ll provide the original cover on the flip side of the booklet. Expect a re-mastered sound with a booklet of photos, lyrics, and a full band

PARADISE UNDER FIRE

Band:PLASMODIVM
Album:PARADISE UNDER FIRE
Label:Caustic
Format:CD
Genre:Dance/Electronica

The year 2009 marks the debut on Caustic Records of this spanish project who has been many years working quietly into the darker electro-industrial field. With this first work titled "Paradise Under Fire", they start a formula that pursues to actively serve as a bridge between the two main currents of the Dark EBM, focusing in the nineties one, but without ignoring sounds and structures more in line with emerging Dark Electro trends. A sonic virus extremely powerful, deadly and corrosive in whose test tube is possible to perceive the influence of bands like Suicide Commando, Sleepwalker, Velvet Acid Christ, E-Craft, Leaether Strip or :Wumpscut: and that, coupled with his unique vision of making dark electronic, makes this Paradise in Flames a shocking experience recommended for the good dark EBM taster, and reaches heights of superb quality with truly daunting tracks as "Be unclean - Stay impure", "Rise," "Life As Slave" or the epic last song of the album "Mi Vida se Apaga parte II," all of them real bombs to the dance floor. In addition, Plasmodivm explores in cuts like "Fade Away" or "Embrace my Fear" sounds and atmospheres close to bands like Mortal Constraint or the first Polygon, with truly remarkable results by the sound designs and use of samples, element that is handled with great skill throughout the work. Prepare to be infected by this new virus that promises to be one of the most amazing releases of the end of this year.

FLOATING

Band:INVADERS
Album:FLOATING
Label:KARATE BODY
Format:CD
Genre:Alt Rock

Invaders features the voice of Joe Meredith, formerly of The Merediths, but this project takes a sharp left turn, exploding with fuzzy, frosty anthemic noise blasts and psychedelic bliss. "Snakey guitar, heavily distorted and subdued vocals, punchy rhythm, and general scratchy psychedelia rule over Floating, and the record is able to weave through oft disparate tempos and moods while remaining consistent and cohesive." — Michael Powell, The Decibel Tolls "The Invaders live near rock music but probably won’t be understood by the AC/DC fan next door. Fans of the Sun City Girls and early Butthole Surfers will be pleased, however, to find a new psychedelic, grainy mindblast of a band. Meredith’s vocals are mixed lower than most singers, taking his vocals away from the spotlight and melding them into the rest of the instruments." —Peter Berkowitz, The Louisville, Ky. Courier-Journal

For fans of Psychedelic Horseshit, Times New Viking, Spacemen 3, Buthole Surfers, 4AD, etc

THE SEA OF SEE THROUGH SKINS

Band:TARDIVE DYSKINESIA
Album:THE SEA OF SEE THROUGH SKINS
Label:CORONER
Format:CD
Genre:Metal

Coming from Greece, Tardive Dyskinesia (an illness caused by long-term use of psychotropic medication that manifests itself in involuntary, repetitive movements of the limbs) come back with a second psychotic monster album: “The Sea Of See Through Skins”, an experimental and hypnotic trip into an obsessive and structurated world, and it features an incredible technical approach and an overload of math structures and tempos. “The Sea of See through Skins”, mixed & mastered at Split Second Sound in the Netherlands by Jacob Jochem (guitarist and producer of Textures), brings the new wave of math metal to a next sick and somber level, as no one ever did before.

A must for fans of Meshuggah, Strapping Young Lad, Textures, Hacride, Mastodon, Gojira

EITHER CAESARS OR NOTHING

Band:FOMENTO
Album:EITHER CAESARS OR NOTHING
Label:CORONER
Format:CD
Genre:Metal

On June 6th, 2006 FOMENTO debuted live in Rome (06/06/06!) and after three years their longawaited first full-length is finally being released worldwide. Every song, from the crushing opener “The Die Is Cast” to the furious “Burial At Sea”, takes you by surprise and just slams you in the fucking balls with all out heaviness. It happens without mercy, with FOMENTO taking the form of a nuclear breakdown with no moment allowing for any respite from the metal carnage. “The album is a journey through time, a metaphor of how after thousands of years man still makes the same sad mistakes.” says Marco, frontman of FOMENTO. If you look for the word FOMENTO in the dictionary you’ll find out it means: instigation, deliberate and intentional triggering of trouble, discord and violence. And that’s all there is to say. The band was founded in late 2005 and since then it’s been shaping its own sound and unique style with punishing riffs and unbelievably brutal drum assaults. The concept album was anticipated by the release of the single “Kill FashionCore”. As soon as it was posted online the song hit the charts like an hurricane establishing FOMENTO as one of the most popular Italian unsigned band on MySpace. The band has already shared the stage with bands like Hatesphere, All Shall Perish, Bonded By Blood and many others. A must for fans of Slayer, Hatebreed, Pantera, Machine Head and Cannibal Corpse.

THE SYNTHETIC LIGHT OF HOPE

Band:HYPNOSIS
Album:THE SYNTHETIC LIGHT OF HOPE
Label:Dark Balance
Format:CD
Genre:Death Metal

HYPNOSIS was born in 1993, but the real start took place in 1996, When Patrice (bass), joined forces with the two original members, Cindy (guitar, vocals) and Pierre (guitar, vocals & machines). From then, they started to develop their own style, from the death-metal of the beginning to a more personal sound that can be described as a blend of death-metal riffing and electronic elements, deep growls and original female voices... The first album, “Shadoworld”, was released in 1999 on Black Lotus Records (Greece) and received cheering reviews from all over the world. But HYPNOSIS really started to build its own and strong identity with its second effort, “Humanoid”, out in 2001 on Sacral Productions (France). After that, Patrice left the band that decided to have a break to redefine its ambitions... Cindy and Pierre started to rehearse again in the end of 2002 and recorded a promo-cd in 2003 that permitted the band to sign a deal with Crash Music (USA) for the release on its third opus, ‘Cyber Death’, in 2004. Patrice helped the band to record this third album, and HYPNOSIS started, for the first time in its career, a 26 gigs tour across France, Belgium, Luxembourg, Switzerland, Italy and Spain to promote this release. Patrice finally came back in august 2005 and HYPNOSIS could start to compose its 4th album, “Seeds of Fate”, released in 2006 on Bent Records (France) and considered by the European metal medias as their best album to date!!!. Once again this album was followed by nearly 40 gigs across France, Belgium, Netherlands, Switzerland, Luxembourg, Germany and Czech Republic... Back from this tour, HYPNOSIS started to work intensively on its most mature effort to date, ‘The Synthetic Light Of Hope’. The France crowd got this copy in 2008 through Great Dane Records. In this year the band gave 30 shows, including a European tour. This tour permitted the band to welcome tho new members, Johan (bass) replacing Patrice, and Greg as a new lead singer. Happily Dark Balance signed with HYPNOSIS to release this album world wide in 2009. November 2009 HYPNOSIS will tour +/- 30 days through The Netherlands, Belgium, Luxemburg, France, Switzerland, Austria, Germany and Czech.

THE NIOBIUM SKY

Band:MORRIGU
Album:THE NIOBIUM SKY
Label:Dark Balance
Format:CD
Genre:Metal

Formed back in 1999, MORRIGU from Switzerland now present their second full-length album ‘The Niobium Sky’. During ten years of existence band members Sevi, Mirko, Viktor, Marc and Merlin (ELUVEITIE) developed their music-style from doomdeath metal into a more distinct, melodic and progressive sound. Inspired by the grey bleakness of the present this new album wit thirteen intense and hypnotic tracks pulls us into a web of melancholy, yet purity and hope. ‘The Niobium Sky’ was recorded at the ‘Horus Sound Studio’ and the ‘Kick The Flame Studio’ by Andy Schmidt, mastermind of ‘DISILLUSION’ and mixed and mastered at ‘Antfarm Studio’ by Tue Madsen (THE HAUNTED, MOONSPELL, DARK TRANQUILITY, MNEMIC, etc.). The musical range involves heavy riffs and catchy guitar melodies, breathtaking clean vocals and a full soundscape with an epic atmosphere. Looking back ten years ago, the intention of MORRIGU was to unite gloomy and severe metal with a spherical tapestry of sounds and the celtic worldly wisdom. In the year 2000 first live experiences were gathered and during Easter 2002 ‘Forgotten Embrace’ was recorded. This debut was released in January 2003 and so it was time for another episode of live gigs to commence. With adding Viktor as second guitar player Morrigu seems complete concerning the instrumental composition and further paved its musical path into the future. The following year was marked by the creation of "MMIV", a demo that again harvested thoroughly positive feedback, one song even making it into a Legacy sampler (Vol 26 & 37). A label however was not found. As nothing can dampen the spirits of MORRIGU, new songs were nevertheless written and with October 2005 the independent recording of ‘The Flock of Crane’ commenced. Inspired by the grey bleakness of the present, in the deep of summer 2007, MORRIGU began to prepare new song ideas. Stylistically the band continues its own way. This all leaded into the signing with Dark Balance and the release ‘The Niobium Sky’.

THE APOCALYPSE IN RETROSPECT

Band:
Album:THE APOCALYPSE IN RETROSPECT
Label:DARK STAR
Format:CD
Genre:Metal

in 1995 when drummer, Shawn Johnson and Guitarist Ryan Buck decided that they’d rule the world with a unique brand of metal seldom or not seen at that time. Their armament? A band called Inspiteofyou. Needless to say that the whole world domination bit did not come to fruition exactly (nor, in retrospect would they have wanted it to – too much maintenance; leaving little or no time to rock) and there have been many anomalous, shocking, thrilling and lamentable moments that have brought these two friends to the year 2007. With the inevitable coming of some auspicious personnel changes, in mid-2007 the band took a rare opportunity to recharge, refresh and continue to hone in on what makes them unique both musically and visually and welcomed new “blood” (pun intended) to the fold. With the addition of the ultra-charismatic Tim Dumpiere on guitar and the inspired madness of Tony Greinke (ex-Down Lo, Concussion) on lead vocals joining the existing ranks of Shawn Johnson on drums, Ryan Buck supplying guitar/vocals and Wolf (ex-Withdrawal, Deacon, Inspiteofyou) on bass, BLOODSTREAM PARADE have been successfully creating new material inspired by the fervor of their impetuous youth. Focusing on writing engaging, aggressive and remarkable music coupled with lyrical content that borders more on the psychological and the esthetically metaphorical than the typical angst or anger-ridden prose of your standard metal band, BLOODSTREAM PARADE compels the listener to think, feel and get metal with thy neighbor.
