Since he started making his own music Philippe Petit has constantly tried to expand his art, and avoid categorization. From his early days manipulating vinyls and foundsounds or field-recordings, he moved on to using piano, organs, vibes, synths, then cymbalum, electric psalterion, guitar, caterpillar drum-guitars built by Yuri Landman, and various other percussive devices… He released dozens of collaborations and some solo works, none of which resembled the previous one, though forming a sonic choreography using space/time, in a multi-dimensional way, spatializing genres with an electro-acoustic approach while preserving a human touch, mostly due to the use of real « classical » instruments, kazooed voices, and percussions.
Composed in 2014, celebrating 30 years of activism in music, Philippe came with another new approach, twisting into unexpected turns while developing some melodies… Building up a tension in his narratives where “Multicoloured Shadows” of Shoegaze dance with electro-acoustically-psyched-out atmospheres… Mouth-noises going thru Kazoos being treated thru amps and reverbs bringing a melodic human touch that is unique and guarantees that once heard Petit cannot be mistaken with any other. “Multicoloured Shadows” is powerul and unpredictable while managing to stay oneiric. Extrema came to light in Milan, Italy, during the cold winter of 1986. 1993 saw the release of their first studio album ‘Tension At The Seams’. The album enjoyed worldwide release and was closely followed by an Italian tour cumulating in opening slots for Metallica as well as the huge Italian star Vasco Rossi, who personally chose the band. The end of 1993 saw the release of the mini LP ‘Proud, Powerful ‘N’ Alive’. The following year saw the recording of ‘The Positive Pressure Of Injustice’, a solid and potent release instantly followed by an hardcore tour of over 100 mind-bending, energetic shows. In 2001 the album ‘Better Mad Than Dead’ showed the world that they were back, with more energy, power and guts than ever. December 2004 saw a slight line-up change with the departure, after 15 years, of drummer Chris Dalla Pellegrina. After a couple of months of auditions, a new name came in: Paolo Crimi, former drummer for Beerbong. The debut shows were received so ecstatically by the fans that they were invited to most prestigious rock/metal festival, Gods of Metal, and the famous Summer Day In Hell festival. In June/July the band entered the Rodger music studios to record ‘Set The World On Fire’. Their 20 years career was celebrated with the release of the live CD ‘Raisin’ Hell With Friends: Live At The Rolling Stone’. In 2008 Extrema supported Bay Area’s metal legends Death Angel for their whole ‘Killing Season European Tour 2008’. And the response, as usual, was amazing: Extrema was voted “best italian band” on Metal Hammer Italy’s readers poll 2007 and their recent, extraordinary DVD ‘Murder Tunes & Broken Bones’ was voted “best DVD” on Rock Hard Italy’s readers poll. Then, in 2009, they released ‘Pound For Pound’ on Scarlet Records. Latest album, “The Seed of Foolishness”, was focused on 'hyper fast thrash metal' and was dropped on Italy and Europe in 2013, getting brillant feedbacks!
