CHOKE

Band:SOFT KILL
Album:CHOKE
Label:Profound Lore
Format:CD
Genre:Post Punk

Portland, Oregon’s SOFT KILL began in 2010 by releasing one of the most highly regarded post punk albums of the last ten years “An Open Door”. Their fourth album “Choke” is scheduled for release on Nov 4th via Profound Lore Records. Founding member Tobias Sinclair (ex-Blessure Grave) joins Conrad Vollmer (Warm Hands) on guitar, drummer Maximillion Avalon (Chromatics, Antioch Arrow, Get Hustle, Atriarch) and Owen Glendower on synths.

The eight song suite “Choke” comes on the heels of 2015’s sophomore effort “Heresy” which was seen as a much more claustrophobic and oppressive album than “An Open Door”. “Choke” by contrast, incorporates a greater depth of songwriting, texture and melody. Soft Kill has discovered a depth of invention and creativity with “Choke”, vast and engaging in scope leaving the listener with an enduring and melancholic bliss. Warm, confident with lush guitars, “Choke” teems with melodic songs, generating urgency and vitality, elevating all that is potent in post punk, building impressively on their previous output. “Choke” is the culmination of years spent perfecting a unique sound, crafted and haunting songwriting that places Soft Kill firmly in the canon of the genre.

Rooted in influences such as the Chameleons, Wire and The Sound the album branches out, pulling delicately from the foundational elements of Cocteau Twins and Spaceman 3. “Choke” places the listener deeply under water and leaves them gasping for breath, placing them above hope with tracks like ‘On The Inside’ which features the vocals of legendary Mark Burgess of Chameleons. The song draws from the first wave of post punk and slips seamlessly into the cascading and ethereal elements of early shoegaze. The opening track ‘Whirl’ bleeds together the pop sentimentality of New Order with the dazzling Sheffield sound of Pulp. Lyrically “Choke” speaks on topics of loss and longing, and the choices we are all asked to make. Soft Kill will be touring extensively in support in the upcoming year.

MUTE BOOKS

Band:AUROCH
Album:MUTE BOOKS
Label:Profound Lore
Format:CD
Genre:Death Metal

Vancouver, BC based death metal band AUROCH have slowly been gaining recognition as one of Canada’s most active death metal bands since their release of their “Taman Shud” LP from 2014. Since then the death metal power-trio, comprised of vocalist/guitarist Sebastian Montesi (who is the bassist/vocalist of MITOCHONDRION), vocalist/bassist Shawn Haché (who is the vocalist/guitarist of MITOCHONDRION) and drummer Zack Chandler, have been active on the live circuit consistently (through various shows, tours and festivals in the US and Canada, including a recent US tour and an appearance at this year’s Maryland Deathfest, and a European tour under their belt likewise with appearances at such festivals as Killtown and Incubate), had their debut album “From Forgotten Worlds” re-issued earlier this year via 20 Buck Spin and most-recently had their split/collab 7”EP with their co-conspirator sister band MITOCHONDRION come out via Dark Descent.

Now the enveloping shadow of dark death metal chaos looms with AUROCH’s new album “Mute Books” which will reveal itself as the band’s darkest, most brutal, complex, and musically virulent release to date, carrying the innovative Canadian death metal tradition laid down by the likes of Gorguts, Cryptopsy (nothing past “None So Vile”!), Kataklysm (nothing past “Temple Of Knowledge” of course!), and more recently through the likes of MITOCHONDRION and CHTHE’ILIST respectively.

With the songwriting on “Mute Books” reaching a new plateau in technicality and over-the-top dynamics along with a new achievement in production and sound courtesy of producer/engineer Arthur Rizk (PRURIENT, PISSGRAVE, Inquisition, Black Twilight Circle, Power Trip), AUROCH have cast their most ferocious undertaking yet; one of the darkest, most violent, whirlwind-like bizarre monuments of alchemic death metal of the year.

LIVE FAVOURITES - CD

Band:BRINSLEY SCHWARZ
Album:LIVE FAVOURITES - CD
Label:MEGA DODO
Format:CD
Genre:Rock

Brinsley Schwarz released a string of classic Pub Rock albums in the early 1970s, but never achieved the success they deserved. That came after the band split up with Nick Lowe and Ian Gomm both scoring UK and US hits and Bob Andrews and Brinsley Schwarz joining Graham Parker and The Rumour. Live Favourites was recorded just after the band recorded their Dave Edmunds produced swansong New Favourites. This is the first time this concert has been released on compact disc in its newly edited and mastered form.

First time on CD -  Remastered and edited from original tapes.

IN SESSION

Band:BIG GRUNT
Album:IN SESSION
Label:MEGA DODO
Format:12 Inch Vinyl
Genre:Psychedelic Rock

By the time that The Bonzo Dog Doo‐Dah Band played their final live dates early in 1970, the individual members had been planning their next move for several months. While for Rodney Slater this meant a career in social work, the others had a more musical direction in mind ‐ and, predictably, nobody's plans were more inventive, ambitious or downright eccentric than those of Vivian Stanshall. In the months leading up to the band's split, both Stanshall and Neil Innes had formed new bands and had already started recording, but while Innes' new project The World had released an album (the superb "Lucky Planet") by the end of 1970, Stanshall's Sean Head Showband, a loose collection of musicians which included Eric Clapton, only managed to put out one single. 'Labiodental Fricative'/'Paper Round' was certainly an impressive single ‐ particularly the a‐side, with its ringing guitars, dreamy middle eight and absurd tongue‐twister lyrics ‐ but the Sean Head Showband was clearly never intended as anything more than a short‐term stopgap project. Barely a month after the release of 'Labiodental Fricative', the Sean Head Showband were effectively defunct and Stanshall announced the arrival of his major new project ‐ biG GRunt.

Yellow vinyl 12-inch / Limited to 500 copies worldwide / Features Bonzo Dog Band frontman Vivian Stanshall / First official release of this historic BBC Peel Session / Features the previously unreleased Cyborg Signal...

Forget Me Not Under Pussy Willow

Band:ICARUS PEEL
Album:Forget Me Not Under Pussy Willow
Label:MEGA DODO
Format:Vinyl LP
Genre:Psychedelic Rock

Icarus Peel has been leading West‐country sensations The Honey Pot and writing songs for Crystal Jacqueline for several years. He also has several solo albums to his name. Forget‐Me‐Not Under Pussy Willow is his forth and first to be issued on vinyl. His idiosyncratic songs have an obviously English flavour with a touch of the bizarre and eccentric. What could be more bizarre and eccentric than a concept album about an undertaker? Forget‐Me‐Not Under Pussy Willow is about good (the undertaker) versus evil (a gang of villains from the smoke). It was written as a bet and Peel won. It’s an exquisite album, not at all dark, but rather peppered with a light, wry humour which seasons Peel’s hook laden psyche pop songs and beautiful ballads. It evokes memories of long agos and times gone by. It is as English as tuppence and as gentle as the bygone time that inspired it.

180 gram black vinyl / Limited to 250 copies worldwide.

LIVE AT GIFHORN

Band:NINE BELOW ZERO
Album:LIVE AT GIFHORN
Label:SIREENA
Format:2CD
Genre:Blues

For almost 40 years now, Nine Below Zero have been providing Blues-enthusiasts around the whole world with their amazing music. But this is not the only reason for the fact that this band has one of the most faithful and active fan communities ever. While the United Kingdom in 1977 was enthralled by Punk, Dennis Graeves and Mark Feltham decided to found a Blues Band which probed to be a lucky decision for musicians and audience alike. Their first album “Live At The Marquee” was already a huge success. It featured songs that later would turn out as classics, such as “Homework”, “Keep On Knocking” and “Ridin’ On The L&N”. They continued at high speed, performances with “The Who” and “Dr. Feelgood” are just as memorable as the longplaying records of the band. In the eighties, the artists took a creative break only in order to have a fulminant fresh start in 1990. That NBZ can still amaze their fans with virtuosity, great songs and most of all fun while performing - they show that on this 2- CD that was recorded during their final concert of the „A to Z Tour” 2015 at the KultBahnhof in Gifhorn, Germany.

DOOMSDAY MACHINE

Band:ELECTRIC MOON
Album:DOOMSDAY MACHINE
Label:SULATRON RECORDS
Format:CD
Genre:Psychedelic Rock

The 3rd studio album „The Doomsday Machine“ of the german acidrockers Electric Moon was released first 2011 (by Nasoni Records). Sulatron Records now releases a CD re-issue of it, with slightly updated graphics. This became due by now!

The music is on a high intensity level and tenders long tracks, eschatological fuzz, cosmic moods, vocals which comes from far out dreamscapes and forceful rhythms. About 80 minutes of apocalyptic music-rituals. The idea was, combining music with visual art, here with the great charcoal paintings by Ulla Papel aka Ulrich Mahn, which fit perfectly to the sound of Electric Moon.
