A DETERMINATION OF MORALITY

Band:ROSETTA
Album:A DETERMINATION OF MORALITY
Label:TRANSLATION LOSS
Format:CD
Genre:METAL/POST ROCK

Uncompromisingly beautiful and absolutely devastating, “A Determinism of Morality” proves to be Rosetta’s most cohesive and trail blazing creation to date. Greatly anticipated and widely revered, Rosetta’s third Translation Loss full length creation solidifies their ascension as one of the most important bands of the decade.

“Gears have been oiled, edges honed and stops firmly pulled out to ensure this is the band’s fullest and most confident release to date.” – Rock Sound Magazine

“Delicately painful and dynamically brutal, the way good experimental metal was meant to be.” – Alternative Press Magazine

SMILING DOGS

Band:MAN'S GIN
Album:SMILING DOGS
Label:Profound Lore
Format:CD
Genre:Alt Rock

Initially conjured by COBALT multi-instrumentalist Erik Wunder when residing in Colorado , MAN’S GIN initially started out by Erik Wunder and a friend who gathered their acoustic guitars to create woeful songs of despair and loneliness in tribute to the drink itself with music to drown one’s sorrows with. The result of this vision ended up as a small collection called “The Rum Demos”, recorded many years ago On homegrown recording equipment. These demos were only circulated amongst the small circle of friends Wunder surrounded himself with.

Fast-forward several years, and COBALT had released its comeback “Eater Of Birds” album and followed said album with “Gin”, which was one of the most celebrated metal albums of 2009 according to top critics and fans alike. By this time Wunder had moved to Brooklyn, NY to pursue hismusical career further and this was where the idea to rejuvenate MAN’S GIN surfaced. Acquiring two more musicians to help bring the MAN’S GIN sound to the next level (by adding grand piano and upright bass) Wunder then began to bring in electric guitars alongside the acoustic guitars and adding drums to the MAN’S GIN song blueprint. Now the sound became complete.

MAN’S GIN’s sound is not metal, but more or less good ol’ Americana singer-songwriter stuff, almost as if COBALT’s sound was transformed into a singer-songwriter vibe and had its metal entirely stripped away from it. MAN’S GIN’s sound is very reminiscent of the likes of such luminary acts as WOVEN HAND, NICK CAVE & THE BAD SEEDS (think “Henry’s Dream” era), the more acoustic side of ALICE IN CHAINS, and even reminiscent of musicians such as JOHNNY CASH and TOM WAITS and bands like DRIVE BY TRUCKERS and 16 HORSEPOWER.

A GREAT WORK OF AGES

Band:STARGAZER
Album:A GREAT WORK OF AGES
Label:Profound Lore
Format:CD
Genre:Death Metal

With one of the most cult followings in death metal today, Australia’s STARGAZER, alongside their comrades in PORTAL, are seen as one of the most unique and bizarre bands in death metal today. With themes steeped in occult lore, STARGAZER’s brand of death metal leans more towards the technical and progressive side of the genre, following in the footsteps paved by such forefathers of the genre such as ATHIEST, CYNIC, PESTILENCE, and GORGUTS.

The two main members of STARGAZER have also been involved with some of Australia’s top underground extreme metal bands likewise, namely MOURNFUL CONGREGATION aswell as being part of PORTAL’s line-up on their seminal “Outre” album. Even though “A Great Work Of Ages” is STARGAZER’s second full-length album, the band have conjured a reputable cult following, pretty much death/extreme metal fans who are looking to indulge in bands that like to push the envelope that liitle bit further.

Alongside PORTAL, Australia’s STARGAZER are considered to be one of the most innovative bands in death metal today and tis thoroughly RIYL : PORTAL, CYNIC, and ATHIEST and other seminal technical death metal luminaries like early PESTILENCE and GORGUTS.

THE DAY THE EARTH MET THE...

Band:ROCKET FROM THE TOMBS
Album:THE DAY THE EARTH MET THE...
Label:SMOG VEIL
Format:CD
Genre:Punk / Proto Punk

Cleveland's only real legitimate claim to house the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame is a band that will never be inducted there. In fact, it is more than 25 years after the group broke up that a legitimate album of their material is now available on Smog Veil. This was Rocket From the Tombs--the mutant daddy to Pere Ubu and the Dead Boys. Originally, singer David Thomas started the band in May 1974 as a kind of comedy act, though later the group would have a good grasp of theatrics. A gifted guitarist/writer named Peter Laughner showed up at some of these farce-filled gigs, jammed with the band and joined soon after that. Thomas and Laughner would make a new more musical lineup that included Gene O'Connor (AKA Cheetah Chrome) (guitar), Craig Bell (bass) and Johnny Madansky (AKA Johnny Blitz) (drums). Somehow this disparate crew got opening gigs ranging from Captain Beefheart to Television (who Laughner actually joined briefly). Without Rocket From The Tombs, the world may have never heard Thirty Seconds Over Toyko, Final Solution , Ain't It Fun, Sonic Reducer, and Down in Flames--all Rockets originals, and all contained on this release, along with 14 other tracks culled from archival live recordings, some of which have never previously been bootlegged.

This is the first ever legitimate release of Rocket From The Tombs recordings, packaged with extensive liner notes and photos. A must have for Pere Ubu/Televison/Dead Boys fans and for anyone with a genuine interest in the birth of US Punk.

David Fricke, editor of Rolling Stone, wrote of Rocket From The Tombs: "No on else in American rock, underground or over, in 1974 and '75, was writing and playing songs this hard and graphic about being f**ked over and fighting mad. No one else is doing it now."

Greg Kot in the Chicago Tribune wrote, "Rocket From the Tombs is not just the great lost proto-punk band of the '70s. It's one of the best bands of the 21st Century too."
