ODDBALLS

Band:FRANK BLACK
Album:ODDBALLS
Label:BURNSIDE
Format:CD
Genre:Alt Rock

The Bureau is proud to present the release of Frank Black’s "Oddballs", a collection of rare gems recorded between 1994 and 1997.

"Oddballs" is a special treat for fans and historians of Black’s epic career. In its initial release in 2000, it was only sold to the lucky folks who went to Frank Black and the Catholics shows. The album is currently out of print, which should be a crime.

'Oddballs’ was made during Frank Black’s transition from a solo studio magician to a purist who recorded everything totally live to 2-track (the method which would eventually be perfected by Frank Black and the Catholics). Many of Oddballs’ treasures are b-sides either from Black’s 1994 acclaimed studio masterpiece Teenager of the Year or from the almost-live, totally raw and powerful Cult of Ray from 1995. Though these oddities are obscure, they are in no way throwaways. Rather, Oddballs gives us a deeper glimpse into Black’s unique vision of rock n’ roll. There are moments of real poetic beauty in the very surreally rocking “Announcement” and in the punky adieu to actor John Candy “At the End of the World”. These are songs at the heart of who Frank Black is at heart: an oddball. Here he is most open and carefree about it. Not many people can yell “Hate Me! My jacket’s not right” at the top of their lungs and make us like them, yet somehow Frank Black knows how to do it.

Oddballs also features outtakes from that era including covers of Roxy Music’s “Remake/Remodel” and the Beau Brummels classic “Just a Little”.

LOS NUGGETZ

Band:VARIOUS ARTISTS
Album:LOS NUGGETZ
Label:ROCK BEAT
Format:4CD BOX SET
Genre:Psych/Garage Reissues

Los Nuggetz is a collection of 1960s hyper kinetic garage, punk, pop and psychedelic music from Mexico, Spain and Latin American countries. While the inspiration for this collection has been the enduring trend and influence of American garage and psych bands from the 60s, it is our hope that this will serve as an introduction to the amazing variety of Mexican and Latin American rock from that era.

A lot of this music has been extremely hard to find and often never reissued since the original vinyl release, with collectors combing record bins, garage sales, eBay with some actually traveling to the country of origin to find these vinyl rarities.

In this spectacular collection, you will find unique interpretations of Wooly Bully, Hey Joe, You Really Got Me, These Boots Are Made For Walkin’ and that’s just on the first CD. You’ll also be amazed at how many songs you recognize from their Spanish translations. The liner notes are comprehensive and extensive and to the best of our abilities, we identified the track, year of original release, group members, their instruments of choice, photos, LP jackets and background information on each group. You’ll also enjoy station checks and commercials, en Espanol,

This is not and historical or definitive collection. It is meant as a portal to discover more from the artists you hear on these discs. Here’s hoping you dig it!

REBELLION HYMNS

Band:MANS GIN
Album:REBELLION HYMNS
Label:Profound Lore
Format:CD
Genre:Rock

Initially formed by Erik Wunder, of COBALT fame, years ago while still living in Colorado, prior to relocating to New York, MAN’S GIN was a singer-songwriter outlet for Wunder and his acoustic guitar to create dark booze jams and murder ballads. Upon moving to New York (Brooklyn), Wunder would round up a MAN’S GIN lineup (upright bass/ebow player Josh Lozano and guitarist/pianist Scott Edward) and take the band’s sound up a notch. The result was their debut album “Smiling Dogs”, which was a sonic jaunt down America’s barren wastelands and garnered acclaim through the underground as well as the band becoming known in putting on an awesome live set every time they played a show (in and around the NY area and would also include, on the live front, a mini tour with Bruce Lamont of YAKUZA).

With their new album, “Rebellion Hymns”, MAN’S GIN have taken their sound to a much more epic plateau by creating a darker and more cinematic opus of grandeur, one that’s moving and emotionally charged, and presents the band’s musical palette in a much more expansive canvas than before. Recorded and produced by Andrew Schneider (Unsane, Pelican, Cave In, Converge etc.) at Translator Audio in Brooklyn, NY and featuring photography and layout by Jimmy Hubbard, “Rebellion Hymns” sees Wunder and co. even bring in a formidable cast of musicians to join the ride. Such musicians that make a guest appearance on “Rebellion Hymns” are Jarboe (ex-SWANS), Wunder’s co-conspirator in COBALT Philip McSorley, Bruce Lamont of YAKUZA, and John LaMacchia of CANDIRIA, who all conspire with the MAN’S GIN crew to create an album of genuine wonder and epic beauty.

ANTI COSMIC TYRANNY

Band:AMSG
Album:ANTI COSMIC TYRANNY
Label:Profound Lore
Format:CD
Genre:Black Metal

Canada’s A.M.S.G. was formed in 2007 after mastermind/black metal crime lord Angelfukk Witchhammer had put his previous cult band Ouroboros to rest and following a served a prison sentence. When A.M.S.G. was conceived, the goal was to create sinister and dangerous black metal that conjures the ancient black metal spirit found in such legendary black metal bands such as Mortuary Drape, early Samael, early Rotting Christ, and Necromantia respectively. A.M.S.G. play a unique style of devil worship black metal that incorporates twisted and deranged mid-paced progressive wierded-out black metal and dark melancholic drear into its deathly sound picture.

Their debut album, “Anti Cosmic Tyranny” (which follows the band’s debut EP “The Principle Of Evil Becomes The Ideal Of The Promethean”) is a testament of the real essence of black metal and is the audial interpretation of a Satanic ritual through its myriad of layered and subliminal sounds and noise, whispers and chants, which comprise, culminate and summon to form this black metal ritual of sonic invocation to honor the endless dark Aeon and the chaotic black light. Mapped out and written during Angelfukk Witchhammer’s most recent prison stint, “Anti Cosmic Tyranny” is an album that will make black metal dangerous again. An album not for the faint at heart or weak of mind and spirit.

For fans of the ancient ways of black metal and such bands as Mortuary Drape, Samael (first two albums only), Rotting Christ (just the old stuff), Necromantia (just the old stuff), and also A.M.S.G. aligning themselves amongst the newer black metal guard alongside bands such as Negative Plane, Avichi, Cobalt, Weapon, and Deathspell Omega

SHADOWS.

Band:MORNE
Album:SHADOWS.
Label:Profound Lore
Format:CD
Genre:Stoner/Doom/Occult/Sludge Metal

Boston, Massachusetts’ MORNE formed in 2005 by Milosz Gassan (ex-Filth Of Mankind). After an initial demo created in 2008 and a split release with Warprayer, MORNE would release their debut full-length album “Untold Wait” in 2009 to critical praise in the underground (including an endorsement from Darkthrone themselves). It also helped MORNE’s reputation that they their guitarist Jeff Hayward was also in the mighty legendary sludge band GRIEF.

MORNE’s style of post-sludge/crust is an interesting interpretation of everything that tends to fall within such a genre. They create their cinematic and epic sound through unrelenting heaviness that is culminated from influences that also include doom metal, and classic rock, and create such an immense atmosphere also through influences such as progressive music and chamber music likewise.

This was showcased with their 2011 release “Asylum”, a sprawling exercise in colossal cinematic heaviness which would push MORNE’s sound even further than their “Untold Wait” debut. When Profound Lore released “Asylum” it helped bring more awareness to the band and with their new album “Shadows”, MORNE have defined a new sense of heaviness within their sound. With a darker, colder, and more dreary and introverted expression, “Shadows” is a crawling and bleak exercise in heaviness. More down-tuned yet more melodic and morose, “Shadows” takes MORNE’s initial sound blueprint and infuses it with a new sense of doom, with several moments on “Shadows” reminiscent of funeral/atmospheric doom akin to such bands as Evoken, Mournful Congregation, and the now defunct Morgion. Nonetheless, “Shadows” will prove MORNE’s distinctness in heavy music even more and will present itself as one of the most memorable underground heavy music releases of the year.

For fans of Neurosis, Isis, Tragedy, Evoken, Mournful Congregation etc.

Led by former Trouble bassist Ron Holzner and featuring the classically trained and critically-acclaimed violin work of Rachel Barton Pine, Earthen Grave combine elements of doom and classic heavy metal, adding a new wrinkle to the heavy rock genre by working in intricate melodies and musical virtuosity within their songcraft; slices of elegance in an otherwise imposing and oppressive heavy sound.

TWO OF YOU / THE HUNTER

Band:WHITE LUNG
Album:TWO OF YOU / THE HUNTER
Label:Deranged
Format:VINYL 7"
Genre:Punk / Hardcore

Hailing from Vancouver, B.C., high-energy punks White Lung pull references from every era of punk remaining unforgiving yet melodic. Their debut LP It's the Evil (Deranged) was named Punk Album Of The Year by Exclaim! and their sophomore LP Sorry (Deranged) has managed to top the last.Spawned from East Vancouver’s dirty DIY Emergency Room scene, White Lung formed in 2006 with guitarist Kenneth joining in 2009. From the beginning they were road warriors, touring regularly, even contemplating selling their underwear just to get on the road (they eventually opted for the more practical route of saving up funds.) White Lung broke out of their incestuous local scene and brought their music across Canada and the US. They continue to tour fanatically, their live shows have been called, “effortlessly engaging and enigmatic, harnessing a controlled violence that managed to be passionate without going the least bit over-the-top” by Exclaim! Magazine.
