MULTICOLOURED SHADOWS

Band:PHILIPPE PETIT
Album:MULTICOLOURED SHADOWS
Label:AAGOO RECORDS
Format:CD
Genre:Avantgarde/Electronic

Since he started making his own music Philippe Petit has constantly tried to expand his art, and avoid categorization. From his early days manipulating vinyls and foundsounds or field-recordings, he moved on to using piano, organs, vibes, synths, then cymbalum, electric psalterion, guitar, caterpillar drum-guitars built by Yuri Landman, and various other percussive devices… He released dozens of collaborations and some solo works, none of which resembled the previous one, though forming a sonic choreography using space/time, in a multi-dimensional way, spatializing genres with an electro-acoustic approach while preserving a human touch, mostly due to the use of real « classical » instruments, kazooed voices, and percussions.

Composed in 2014, celebrating 30 years of activism in music, Philippe came with another new approach, twisting into unexpected turns while developing some melodies… Building up a tension in his narratives where “Multicoloured Shadows” of Shoegaze dance with electro-acoustically-psyched-out atmospheres… Mouth-noises going thru Kazoos being treated thru amps and reverbs bringing a melodic human touch that is unique and guarantees that once heard Petit cannot be mistaken with any other. “Multicoloured Shadows” is powerful and unpredictable while managing to stay oneiric. WALKING OUT

Band:THE BARON FOUR
Album:WALKING OUT
Label:STATE RECORDS
Format:VINYL 7"
Genre:Psych/Garage

With their debut LP still making waves and sales around the globe, The Baron Four unleash their 3rd single, and 2nd for State Records. Recorded in February at The Ponswood Hit Factory, the almighty outpouring of energy on these 2 cuts is astounding. Top side “Walking Out” pitches elements of ‘Psychotic Reaction’ and ‘You Don’t Love Me’ against an all too familiar tale of woe at the hands of a demon temptress! Mike Whittaker’s impassioned vocal is matched by a brutal instrumental track, resolutely recorded ‘in the red’ for maximum impact. Jagged guitars, pounding bass and clattering drums combine to make the biggest and best racket you’re likely to hear this year!

Over on the flip, things calm down a little (but not too much!) with the moody minor key vibe of “Can’t Find My Way”. Some ace tremelo guitar and sweet backing vocals are on display here, showing a more controlled side to the group, in stark contrast to the full-on cacophony on the A-side!!

WHERE THE WATER RUNS DEEP

Band:THE BEATPACK
Album:WHERE THE WATER RUNS DEEP
Label:STATE RECORDS
Format:VINYL 7"
Genre:Psych/Garage

The Beatpack initially peddled their primal wares from 1987 to 1991, terrorising audiences with their distinctive brand of violent Rhythm & Blues, their intense hessian-sack-clad live shows and their acres of hair. Recording an EP, a 45 and an LP for Screaming Apple Records, the group burned out in a blaze of glory and its members scattered to the four winds.

Fast-forward twenty years and the 'Pack are back. Reunited in order to complete their mission to bring hip-shakin', feedbackscreeching, blues-wailing garage punk R&B to the masses, and featuring original members Simon Harvey (lead guitar), William Bourton Esq. (bass guitar) and Hugh Dellar (vocals and harmonica) alongside new boy Adrian Smith on rhythm and the inimitable Ian O'Sullivan on drums, the band have already played a pre-Purple Weekend night in Leon, Spain, the Berlin Beat Explosion and Le Beat Bespoke in London.

These 2 new sides are primitive, high-energy, kick-ass R & B at their finest. Pulling out all the stops at The Ponswood Hit Factory, these guys could show ANY new young group how it should be done, with all the necessary elements in place—crackling guitars, pounding drums, throbbing bass and hysterical vocals. Any fan of The Pretty Things, Downliners Sect and Clapton-era Yardbirds should cock an ear in this direction IMMEDIATELY!

MONTEVIDEO BLUES

Band:MONTEVIDEO BLUES
Album:MONTEVIDEO BLUES
Label:LION PRODUCTIONS
Format:LP VINYL
Genre:Psych/Garage Reissues

First time vinyl reissue of 1972 South American Holy Grail •Grooving and edgy rock with native Uruguayan rhythms •Insert packed with photos, detailed history, and bi-lingual lyrics for this important Uruguayan band •Limited to 500 copies !

The one and only album by Montevideo Blues (1972) is a serious contender as one of the most important, and as it happens, most grooving records released in Uruguay. It's also incredibly rare, fetching big prices when it appears, which is almost never. But there is another reason that the album has attained exalted status: Montevideo Blues was founded by Uruguayan song-writing legend Gastón “Dino” Ciarlo as a way to fuse the rawness of rock music with obscure native Uruguayan rhythms like malambo, milonga and chamarrita. “At the time, we were revolutionary and looking for change,” said Dino. Montevideo Blues demonstrated an unyielding and combative attitude. During live shows in 1971, Dino criticized the government—a dangerous level of political commitment, reflected in the lyrics of the songs, some of the most radical ever set to music. Eduardo Mateo, the sacred monster of modern Uruguayan music, was succinct: “You have decided to prune the tree,” he said to Dino. The album opens with one of Dino’s most famous songs ‘Milonga de Pelo Largo’ (‘Milonga of the Long Hair’), a sinuous groove transformed by the arrival of the dictatorship into a hymn of Uruguayan popular resistance. The rest of the album tracks—the fantastic 'Para Hacer Mùsica, Para Hacer' and 'Un Color' are standouts—have an edgy quality, with terrific unconventional angular guitar and a kind of ragged glory, driven along by insistent grooving rhythms. Insert is packed with photos, detailed band history, and bi-lingual lyrics for this important Uruguayan band.

MR OIL MAN

Band:JARVIS STREET REVUE
Album:MR OIL MAN
Label:LION PRODUCTIONS
Format:LP VINYL
Genre:Psych/Garage Reissues

From the original master tapes •Limited to 500 copies • Heavy tip-on gatefold jacket + insert with band history, photos, images of sheet music for several songs, and lyrics for the band's greatest statement, 'Mr. Oil Man.'

“I could go on and on about how great the record is..." —Helios Creed / Chrome

Poised between Toronto and Winnipeg, Thunder Bay, Ontario became the refuge for every touring band in Canada; a mandatory break while crossing the perilously vast Canadian Shield. No doubt, Canada’s vastness can be heard in much of the Northernly musical output. There is perhaps no better example of this than Thunder Bay’s Jarvis Street Revue. Their lone LP, leased to Columbia for release in 1971, leaves no one untouched by the band’s sheer avalanche of psychedelic heaviness, wasted acid leads and harrowing vocals. Every song is laced with a conviction born from the physical landscape they called home. Jarvis Street Revue spent (literally) a month of Sundays recording the album and bouncing tracks to create effects. “Chuck Williams was so freaked out, he used to leave the room,” Jarvis leader and Neil Young running mate Tom Horricks said. “It was so anti-establishment.” Creative and far-seeing... and not without some chemical support. The albums's (and band's) concern with the environmental—including bold statements on the use and abuse of the oil reserves, rapacious business men, and the depletion of Earth’s natural resources—were truly visionary.
