DESPOND

Band:LOSS
Album:DESPOND
Label:Profound Lore
Format:CD
Genre:Stoner/Doom/Occult/Sludge Metal

Hailing from Nashville, Tennessee and having formed around 2004, LOSS have built a reputation as one of the most dominant funeral/death doom metal bands in the underground over the years. This inception began with their “Conceptual Funeralism” rehearsal/demo which made its way through underground channels and was followed by their next demo entitled “Life Without Hope… Death Without Reason”, a demo which made its rounds likewise and would eventually be released as an official EP. Said EP would solidify LOSS as one of the premiere funeral/death doom metal bands to hail from the States and the band would continue releasing material that would come in the form of several split EPs (a notable one, being the Four Burials four way split LOSS shared with such bands as MOURNFUL CONGREGATION, ORTHODOX, and OTESANEK).

Even though “Despond” is their debut album, it has become one of the most anticipated doom metal albums in recent time. The band have amassed a reputable cult following of sorts within the doom metal scene (and the black metal scene likewise) having released several splits with other cult underground bands of an elite nature (bands like WORSHIP and NECROS CHRISTOS), several EP’s (most notably their “Life Without Hope…” EP), and having played a fair amount of live shows

ASYLUM

Band:MORNE
Album:ASYLUM
Label:Profound Lore
Format:CD
Genre:Stoner/Doom/Occult/Sludge Metal

Boston, Massachusetts’ MORNE formed in 2005 by Milosz Gassan (ex-Filth Of Mankind) a musician who has become an urban legend of sorts within Poland’s underground crust movement. After an initial demo created in 2008 and a split release with Warprayer, MORNE would release their debut full-length album “Untold Wait” in 2009 to critical praise in the underground. Said album would even gain more awareness when both Fenriz and Nocturno Culto of DARKTHRONE praised and endorsed MORNE’s style of apocalyptic epic sludge/crust (that has been comparable to the likes of early NEUROSIS and ISIS) as MORNE themselves would even become endorsed on the cover to the last Darkthrone album “Circle The Wagons” where MORNE’s logo found its way on Darkthrone’s mascot’s leather jacket. It also helped MORNE’s reputation that they also had members in their lineup that have been involved in such bands as GRIEF (guitarist Jeff Hayward), ALABAMA THUNDERPUSSY, THE MIGHTY NIMBUS, BIRDS OF PREY etc. (ex-drummer Erik Larson).

Nonetheless, MORNE’s style of post-sludge/crust is an interesting interpretation of everything that tends to fall within such a genre. While references to bands such as Neurosis and Isis are easy to pinpoint, MORNE create their cinematic and epic vibe through unrelenting heaviness that is culminated from influences such as traditional heavy metal, doom metal, and classic rock, and create such an immense atmosphere also through influences such as classic ‘70s prog, neo-classical chamber music, and classic post-punk/new wave (i.e. JOY DIVISION, early CURE).

MORNE are considered as one of the most prominent and important post-metal bands today by combining influences from traditional metal, crust, doom metal, and classic prog and are mandatory for fans of bands such as early NEUROSIS, and ISIS

“Asylum” features guest appearances by JARBOE (ex-SWANS) and Kris Force (AMBER ASYLUM) on the closing track ‘Volition’

BIG SEXY NOISE

Band:BIG SEXY NOISE
Album:BIG SEXY NOISE
Label:ALONE RECORDS
Format:LP/DVD
Genre:Avant-Garde

LYDIA LUNCH AND GALLON DRUNK!

Big Sexy Noise follow up their vinyl mini album, released in summer of 2009, with a full blown LP album. The band, fronted by Lydia Lunch and Gallon Drunk alt-rockers James Johnston, Terry Edwards and Ian White, have recorded a further five Johnston/Lunch originals plus a Lynyrd Skynyrd cover to complement the original six tracks.

Big Sexy Noise is the primaeval bump, grind and holler of White’s thuggish drums, Johnston’s moronic low-tuned riffing and Edwards’ brutal organ and sax interventions led by Lunch’s take-no-prisoners vocals. The album opens with The Gospel Singer which Lunch wrote with Kim Gordon (Sonic Youth), followed by Lou Reed’s Kill Your Sons before settling into the trademark songs by Big Sexy Noise protagonists Johnston and Lunch.

The LP release includes a fantastic DVD live performance with 5 tracks at Le Batofar, Paris, on their 2010 european tour.

PUEDO VER TU MENTE

Band:DAMO SUZUKI and CUZO
Album:PUEDO VER TU MENTE
Label:ALONE RECORDS
Format:CD
Genre:PSYCH/INSTRUMENTAL

DAMO SUZUKI, the legendary vocalist of the German band CAN, (with whom he recorded four of his most important records, Tago Mago, Future Days, Soundtracks and Bamyasi Ege), and the Spanish band CUZO are releasing in Alone Records, a live album recorded in one of their dates together last year. The title of the album, ”Puedo ver Tu Mente” (I Can See Your Mind), reflects the experience of see live these two acts. Ahead of what usually it can be found on a standard live album, here there are songs that have less recognizable structure. ”Puedo ver Tu Mente” is the recording of a gig that took place on November the 4th 2009 in the small town of Huesca, where DAMO SUZUKI and CUZO met for the first time on stage. From here, the band and DAMO started a Spanish tour of 7 dates. On the album we have a single piece divided in three movements from where many songs could emerge but that dilutes any trace of structure and links the musical passages with undeniable perfection to other states of mind, sometimes more relaxed and other times more electric. The pause between tracks is no more than the required oxygen intake before making another dive on the listening experience. It seems quite obvious that is very difficult to fit compositional brilliance, technical virtuosity and creative talent in songs that last no more than 4 o 5 minutes, but what if those three components were released from the limitations of time and format? This concept which is so close to the “free-jazz” definition, is the glue where the music of DAMO SUZUKI and CUZO mix together and sculpt a sound speech that is constantly mutating and fed back with bites of progressive-rock, stoner, psych, kraut, improvisation and many similar styles. Throughout the length of the album the peaks of intensity and changes of humor are happening continuously in response to the exposure of the mutual influence, the sum of both entities. This is precisely the purpose of the Damo Suzuki's Network through its "Never-ending Tour", where he plays with other musicians from the different countries. This keeps his discourse alive and dynamic, being reinterpreted every night, without egos among the artists who are really at the service of the music they are playing at that time. This is what CAN and DAMO SUZUKI called “Instant Composition”; each concert is unique and therefore is a unique opportunity to create a new sound work. That is what DAMO SUZUKI and CUZO made in their first gig together.

PREACHING THE END TIME MESSAGE

Band:EYEHATEGOD
Album:PREACHING THE END TIME MESSAGE
Label:ALONE RECORDS
Format:vinyl lp
Genre:Stoner/Doom/Occult/Sludge Metal

Eyehategod do not give a fuck, they do one goddamned thing and they do it fucking well; craft slow, sludgy heroin caked beasts of riff that no one can deny. On this rarities and demo collection, albeit too short, more than enough is made up for in piss and vinegar, doom and smoke. From the early demo of Methamphetamine to the newly recorded International Narcotic, 36 Beers and a Ball of String, and Turn Troubled Tables, EHG have let nothing stop them, whether it be god, guns, drugs, death, weather or the police, these dudes will persevere and struggle, it seems that they do not know or care to do it any other way. This record and all that helped make it over the last 16 years is the true sound of hope struggling to get out from under the rock. If ever there was truth in music, Eyehategod is bringing it.

Special ltd vinyl release, 180gr vinyl on Gatefold Cover.

On this situation it is great to sometimes find that there are still bands that show personality, honesty and authenticity these days. This is the case of ORTHODOX, a band with a career of over 10 years and 3 albums released that now presents their latest called "Ba'al".

"ORTHODOX were a metal band once, but they have become much bigger. At this point, everything they have in common with doom music or any other style of metal music is the sense of spirituality and their search of catharsis through rites" The Wire

THE MERCIAN SPHERE

Band:WINTERFYLLETH
Album:THE MERCIAN SPHERE
Label:BURNING WORLD
Format:VINYL LP
Genre:Black Metal

The vastness of The Mercian Sphere should be intimidating, but by varying the tone, from the furious and dark to the contemplative and brooding, Winterfylleth have crafted a record of overpowering emotion and sincerity that grips throughout. Along with bands such as Fen and Wodensthrone, they represent the forefront of those black metal bands that could not come from anywhere else but here, in the same way that Negură Bunget could only be from Romania. While there are some superb British bands within the sphere, be it the inner‐city filth of Anaal Nathrakh or the gothic Romanticism of early Cradle Of Filth, British black metal does not have the best of names. It is difficult to imagine what more a single record could do to try and change that‐ this is a staggering opus of the highest accomplishment. Irrespective of whether you share in these feelings, the music is overwhelmingly powerful. Beautiful and foul, vicious and gentle, rooted in the classic blueprint yet not afraid to go beyond that, The Mercian Sphere is a breathtaking achievement.
