ROCK N ROLL ICE CREAM

Band:JAPANTHER
Album:ROCK N ROLL ICE CREAM
Label:Seayou
Format:CD
Genre:Punk / Proto Punk

Described as a “Performance Galaxy” by Vanity Fair and “Super hard, incredibly fast and overall inspiring” by Thrasher, Japanther (www.japanther.com) has always been a band apart, running the gamut from performance art to punk rock and back again.

Pushing parties to the limit and only stopping short of riots, Japanther returns in 2011 with new member Anita Sparrows (The Soviettes) and Rock ‘n’ Roll Ice Cream. Says Ian Vanek, “We met Miss Sparrows on Christmas Eve in San Pedro and formed an instant bond. She is family to us and making music with her is just a part of it.” With Sparrows on board, Vanek and Matt Reilly flew to Los Angeles to work with producer Michael Blum, whose past projects with Michael Jackson, Madonna (Like a Prayer, Who’s That Girl), Pink Floyd and Suicidal Tendencies seemed a daring fit for Rock ‘n’ Roll Ice Cream, an album envisioned by Japanther as a dance party–– and all the kids are invited. “Telephone mics? Really?” exclaimed Michael as the group began what was to become a near-perfect expression of an underground sound. Continuing Japanther’s established habit of collaborating with inspiring icons from every scene, legendary poet Eileen Myles (Cool For You, Chelsea Girls) appears on two astonishing tracks.

Nachtmystium‘s Blake Judd commented: “Our experience at Roadburn was truly one of a kind. Never have we been treated so well by organizers of any festival or tour we have been a part of, and it was truly a blessing to work with the kind folks behind this amazing festival. I’d also like to thank Ron van Herpen from Astrosoniq / The Devils Blood and Teun van der Velden from Astrosoniq for stepping in on very last minute notice to help us out with the lead guitar and synthesizer duties for this performance. Without these two gentlemen, our show would not have been what it was."

DIOTIMA

Band:KRALLICE
Album:DIOTIMA
Label:Profound Lore
Format:CD
Genre:Black Metal

It didn’t take long for Brooklyn, NY’s KRALLICE to get notoriety. Initially formed because of a desired collaboration between notorious avant-garde shredder Mick Barr and technical guitar wizard Colin Marston, for both musicians to explore a more black metal terrain with their music, KRALLICE was originally supposed to be a one-off kind of sporadic project for both musicians to create an album, with vocals (which both musicians weren’t even used to), with an actual band, and with the uncertainty that there would be any more albums following the self-titled debut.

That thought would quell quickly enough as KRALLICE immediately became a functioning band, playing shows along with their debut garnering critical acclaim all across the board through many prominent media outlets and immediately, KRALLICE would become a one-of-akind act within extreme metal. A band unlike anything the scene has befallen upon.

And now with KRALLICE’s third album “Diotima”, the band have undoubtedly released their darkest, heaviest, most-dense, hypnotizing, challenging and accomplished album to date, a turning point album for KRALLICE if there ever was one. The album the band themselves are the most satisfied with and the album (in every aspect possible, from the playing, the performances, and ultimately the production) in which will even more solidify KRALLICE’s importance as one of the most prominent and unique extreme metal bands and exports from America.

BORN LUCKY

Band:JAMES APOLLO
Album:BORN LUCKY
Label:MARTERRY MUSIC
Format:CD
Genre:Alt-Country / Americana

In the summer of 2010, US troubadour James Apollo released his British debut, ‘’Til Your Feet Bleed’. He now follows it less than 12 months later with ‘Born Lucky’, a career-spanning compilation that ducks and weaves through his extensive back catalogue, stretching back over six prolific years.

Informed by the imagery of William Faulkner and Flannery O’Connor’s Southern prose, Apollo’s music also recalls Ennio Morricone’s spaghetti-western themes akin to fellow countrymen Giant Sand, all grizzled with a Tom Waitsian fervour, and the lush, warming tones of Roy Orbison. ‘Born Lucky’ is a record that sweeps through the emotions, both fleeting and fundamental, that document the bittersweet, cinematic legacy of both Apollo’s past, and his ongoing journey - Americana at its most romantically sunset-strewn and desolate.

Confirmed reviews in Word Magazine, Uncut Magazine and Q magazine. “Til Your Feet Bleed” Apollo's 2010 release received 4 star reviews in MOJO and UNCUT

THIEVES LIKE US

Band:THIEVES LIKE US
Album:THIEVES LIKE US
Label:Seayou
Format:VINYL LP
Genre:Dance/Electronica

Thieves Like Us are two Swedes and one American living in Berlin, Paris, and Milan. They are one of the only multi-nationals that won't exploit you. Mexicans love them. The French love them. Americans love them. The Japanese love them. Neither Andy Grier (vocals, guitar), Bjorn Berglund (synth), nor Pontus Berghe (percussion) live in their home countries, and none of them probably ever will again. They first met at a picnic in East Berlin in 2002. Since then, they have also lived together in London, Paris, and New York City. The trio can often been seen in and around night clubs, but they fit awkwardly there. Thieves Like Us were first discovered by the French imprint Kitsune who released their single, "Drugs In My Body" in 2007. They make pop music with a vintage electronic feel. Many times it makes you dance. Other times it makes you feel strange and wonderful. Back in the day they probably would have signed a contract in blood with Factory Records. 2008's "Play Music", their first album, would definitely have fit the bill. BBC Music called it "consistently exciting ... a contender for electronic album of the year."

Limited Vinyl LP.

LOVE AND FIST

Band:LOVE AND FIST
Album:LOVE AND FIST
Label:Seayou
Format:CD
Genre:Indie/Shoegaze

Love & Fist was born and raised in the rural, rolling hills of Upper Austria. After four years in the making they are going to release their debut album on Seayou Records which is highly anticipated by Austrian press since both members used to be in the biggest Indie Rock Bands of that country. The first outtake of that album reached top 10 chart positions and good airplay immediately. Their Music has a very rural touch to it, nonetheless it is heavily (almost Hollywood-like) orchestrated and full of mad arrangments. Scott Walker would be proud.

FAMILY FAVOURITES

Band:BIG EYES
Album:FAMILY FAVOURITES
Label:KARATE BODY
Format:VINYL LP
Genre:Folk

Family Favourites is a collection of reworked old Big Eyes songs, alongside some new material and also a cover version. The group started just over 10 years ago, so the decision was taken to reassess the back catalogue, and rework/rearrange/rerecord some songs with the recent players to perhaps serve the pieces a little more fully. A ‘best-of’, if you will, or perhaps a retrospective?

Each LP comes with a download card for a free copy of the album.
