FANTASMA NERA

Band:KINGS DESTROY
Album:FANTASMA NERA
Label:SVART
Format:LP
Genre:DOOM

Limited vinyl with bonus 7 inch. Following what seemed to be a definitive statement with their third, self-titled album and tours in the US, Europe, and Australia and New Zealand, New York's Kings Destroy have stepped back and taken on their core identity as a band. Challenging each other every step of the way, they enlisted producer David Bottrill (Tool, King Crimson, Stone Sour), and after paring down their approach and their songwriting to the most crucial elements, they crafted Fantasma Nera, an album that presents a wider creative breadth than anything they ve done before. Fantasma Nera isn t just the album Kings Destroy wanted to make; it s where they took on outside expectation what others thought and confronted their own ideas about who they could be as a band. Every KD LP has been different from the one before, but Fantasma Nera brazenly reshapes Kings Destroy as a group, and in confronting what seemed to be their own limitations, the band found just one more obstacle to be surpassed in their continuous process of becoming.

SYNTHEOSIS

Band:WASTE OF SPACE ORCHESTRA
Album:SYNTHEOSIS
Label:SVART
Format:CD
Genre:COSMIC METAL

The epic collaboration between Oranssi Pazuzu and Dark Buddha Rising The awe-inspiring Finnish metallic psychedelicists Oranssi Pazuzu and their Tampere cohorts Dark Buddha Rising, known for their grandiose slug-paced ritualist doom metal, have recorded a new album, which will be released on Svart Records on April 5th, 2019. The amalgam of these two entities is melted as one on Syntheosis, to be released under the moniker Waste of Space Orchestra. Syntheosis began as a commissioned piece for Roadburn Festival. The fest, which began as a smallscale gathering of stoner rock addicts has evolved over the years into a four-day celebration of heavy music in all of its possible forms and interpretations, from riffworship to punishing soundscapes and beyond. The list of Roadburn performers over the years is a veritable who s who of underground heavy culture, with everyone from Neurosis and Sleep to Godflesh having performed at the event. Syntheosis the commissioned piece was prepared at the request of the festival and performed there in April 2018 in front of over 3000 people. Syntheosis the album is not a live recording but a carefully prepared studio interpretation, on which the ten musicians worked over the spring and summer of 2018. The album was recorded and mixed by Julius Mauranen, who also worked on Oranssi Pazuzu s Värähtelijä. The album can be digested as a challenging, engaging psych metal record or as a dimension-spanning one-hour performance consisting of nine parts. The work recounts a story of three beings and their deep search for knowledge.

NOTHING IS ORDINARY

Band:OMNIA OPERA
Album:NOTHING IS ORDINARY
Label:SOUND EFFECT
Format:3LP
Genre:PSYCH ROCK/ACID ROCK

There surely aren’t many bands that can lay claim to being the primary (or, indeed, only) exponents of an entire genre – but psychedelic legends Omnia Opera can, because, well, they invented it. Back in the early 1980’s, when the GB free festival scene was still some years from its zenith, and the second wave of psychedelic bands that would accompany it were still just a metaphorical blotter on the tongues of their founding members, some friends from Kidderminster, UK hit upon the idea of ‘plasma rock’. Taking elements of a variety of mind-expanding and progressive music, they distilled them into a uniquely potent and energetic style. Incorporating searing punk-edged acid rock with cutting-edge interstellar synthesis & sampling, and largely staying away from the meandering jams that had mostly taken over the psychedelic form, they preferred instead well-observed politically-edged, socially-conscious and cosmically-inclined lyrics alongside powerful arrangements. Over the next ten years or so, the band would release several albums – initially on cassette only, recorded and distributed by themselves, and selling out time and time again, and later on CD & vinyl courtesy of the legendary Delerium Records (home, at the time, for Steven Wilson’s Porcupine Tree project amongst others). Then, just as it looked as if the band might be making progress into a wider awareness, they split up.Fast-forward to 2006, and the band decided to get together to do a 20th anniversary gig…one thing led to another, and for the next four years they toiled ceaselessly writing and recording what was to become their magnum opus, the album ‘Nothing is Ordinary’. Originally self-released as a double CD to a rapturous reception, it is only now that Greek psych label Sound-Effect Records, great fans of the band themselves, have got behind a mammoth triplevinyl edition. Meticulously remastered for vinyl by Mark Cawthra at The Infallible Ear, and with packaging to match the original CD release (a stunning triplegatefold sleeve, with printed inserts to house the vinyl), no expense or trouble has been spared to make this limited edition vinyl an absolute essential for any lover of psychedelic music or acid rock.

BEWILDERED JANE

Band:HONEY POT, THE
Album:BEWILDERED JANE
Label:MEGA DODO
Format:LP
Genre:PSYCH

The Honey Pot play a blend of Sixties psych that has its boots in the past but its head in the future, they draw on that unique English inheritance of the surreal and the strange, but are not afraid to indulge in an American West-Coast style adventure when the mood takes them. Bewildered Jane is their forth long-player, fifth if you include their recent compilation of odds and sods. Like all good bands, they are on a journey. This time out their sonic palette has taken on a deeper and richer hue. The harmonies are that little bit richer. The sound that little bit fuller. The mood that little bit darker. Their successful combination of elements drawn from English and American psychedelia has created their own unique take on the genre. There are remnants enough of what fans would expect to keep them happy from a new Honey Pot album and sufficient experimentation to keep them interested.
