VEXOVOID

Band:PORTAL
Album:VEXOVOID
Label:Profound Lore
Format:CD
Genre:Death Metal

There has been no death metal band in the genre’s history as bizarre, unique, and aesthetically engaging as Australia’s PORTAL. Whether it would be the band’s singular vision through their polarizing music, their otherworldly live show, or the visual imagery the band portray themselves as, PORTAL have incidentally, slowly building over the last ten or so years through this crawling culmination, set a new standard within the death metal scene and have given new meaning to the term “death metal” respectively.

It was a sound unheard of, that PORTAL emanated through the artistic surrealist death metal psychosis; weird rhythms and perplexing musical structures to create this cinematic soundscape of sheer terror and horror. Like a soundtrack to a Lovecraftian nightmare manifested, PORTAL would bring sonic plague and disease through three full-length albums which helped signal the future of death metal, the last one “Swarth” being the band’s most recognized album that was released in 2009. The follow-up to “Swarth”, entitled “Vexovoid”, sees PORTAL taking their sound even further with their biggest and most dense sounding album to date and taking their artistry to new levels unheard of and proving once again why they are the harbingers of the new coming dreadful age of death metal.

“Vexovoid” is one of the most anticipated and important death metal albums to be released in 2013 - PORTAL are now known as one of the most innovative bands in the death metal genre to emerge in the last ten years and one of the most important death metal bands today

ARRIVING ANGELS

Band:HELEN MONEY
Album:ARRIVING ANGELS
Label:Profound Lore
Format:CD
Genre:Avant-Garde

The new album from avant-classical virtuoso cellist Helen Money (aka Alison Chesley) is entitled “Arriving Angels”. This is the third full-length album Chesley has recorded under the moniker Helen Money. She created Helen Money to showcase her compositions and her very uncommon approach on the cello, but also has quite the repertoire at her disposal. Aside from her solo work as Helen Money and her classical upbringing, Chesley has played on over 100 albums with such artists as Bob Mould, Disturbed, Mono, Anthrax, Broken Social Scene, Yakuza, Russian Circles, and Archer Prewitt among others. Chesley has also composed music for film and dance, including the soundtrack to the award-winning documentary Indestructible. Chesley was also part of the acoustic rock duo Verbow, releasing two albums on Epic Records in the nineties and toured nationally for seven years opening for such acts as Frank Black, Bob Mould, Counting Crows, Live, Morrissey, and Liz Phair. As Helen Money, Chesley has opened for bands as diverse as Mono, Earth, The Bad Plus, Nina Nastasia, and toured the U.S. and Europe extensively with Steve Albini’s band Shellac.

Nonetheless, “Arriving Angels” (which will feature artwork and design by Steve Byram, responsible for the design of “Reign In Blood” and “Licensed To Ill”!) will be one of the most intriguing Profound Lore releases to date. Recorded, engineered, and mixed by the iconic Steve Albini in Electrical Audio and also featuring Neurosis drummer Jason Roeder on four tracks, “Arriving Angels” is unique opus which comprises an intriguing mix of classical composition, experimental music, and progressive dirge-like metal, all displayed through the sole vessel of the cello.

SINGULARITY

Band:ROBBY KRIEGER
Album:SINGULARITY
Label:PLANETWORKS
Format:VINYL LP
Genre:Rock

First album in over a decade from legendary Doors guitarist Robby Krieger now available on Vinyl!

Whenever an album contains intros that stretch over the three-minute mark, it's a safe bet that the record can't be called "urgent," and so is the case with Singularity, Robby Krieger's first album in a decade. Like Cinematix before it, Singularity is a jazz fusion session in an old-fashioned sense, relying on Rhodes keyboards and lite funk grooves, sounding a bit like a cross between Jeff Beck's Blow by Blow and Steely Dan's Aja, graced with a little bit of Boz Scaggs' cool touch and a lot of Krieger's winding single-note lines. There may be a clear through-line from the guitar solo of "Light My Fire" to this, but that doesn't mean Krieger is playing it safe: on those intros he indulges in some fleet flamenco fingerwork, easily the most notable new wrinkle among the ten cuts here, but even when he eases back to his comfort zone, there's a fluidity in his fretwork that keeps things engaging

A great look back at Ace Of Hearts Records, the label who released the finest American Rock music during the new wave era.

There's no arguing that most of what Ace Of Hearts released in their classic era (1978-1980) was brilliant stuff. Label owner and legendary producer, Rick Harte, had a ear for great bands and an admirable commitment to quality. If all Harte ever did was record and release the first singles from the Lyres and Mission of Burma, he'd have earned a place of honor in the halls of the American rock community, and 12 Classic 45s, which collects the material from 12 noteworthy Ace of Hearts 7"s, confirms his knack for finding great music.

THE SOUND OF AMERICA

Band:PETER STAMPFEL AND THE ETHER FROLIC MOB
Album:THE SOUND OF AMERICA
Label:BURNSIDE
Format:CD
Genre:Folk

The Ether Frolic Mob came about in 2006 when John Cohen (founding member of New Lost City Rambler's with Mike Seeger and Tom Paley) formed the Velocity Ramblers with Peter Stampfel, Walker & Sam Shepard and Betty Berkin. Then Peter and John launched the Ether Frolic Mob, Walker Shepard joined, bringing along his bandmates Eli Smith and Craig Judelman from the world renowned string band The Dustbusters. Poet, artist and musician, Jane Gilday, Hubby Jenkins, (Carolina Chocolate Drops), Jeannie Scofield (The Boy Bathing), and Zoe Stampfel, Peter's delightful and zany daughter, round out the group. Stampfel promises, "will stick our hands up the butt of American music, grab it by the throat, and pull it inside-out. It's 21st century 19th century American music played in a vast variety of 20th century styles."...and by golly they do it!

Peter Sampfel is one of the founds of the Freak Folkmovement and The Holy Modal Rounders has a world wide fan base, along with John Cohen, another Folk hero.
