SOUTH OF SALEM

Band:WITCH MOUNTAIN
Album:SOUTH OF SALEM
Label:Profound Lore
Format:CD
Genre:Stoner/Doom/Occult/Sludge Metal

Witch Mountain was formed in Portland, OR in 1997 by Rob Wrong (Iommi Stubbs, ex-M99) and Nathan Carson (Point Line Plane, Two Ton Boa, Sunn0))) collaborator, etc). By 2000, the groundwork had been laid, the demo “Homegrown Doom” remastered and released in Europe, and Dave Hoopaugh was brought in to be the final bass player.

Their debut album “…Come The Mountain” was released to critical acclaim in 2001. The first printing sold out in two months, and an expanded edition was released with bonus tracks composed for the unreleased PC/Dreamcast video game "Shrapnel".

Between 1998 and 2002 Witch Mountain became a live staple in the Northwest and on the national circuit, touring with Weedeater and Spirit Caravan, and gigging with the likes of Lost Goat, Bongzilla, Goatsnake, Acid King, High on Fire, Orange Goblin, Electric Wizard, YOB, Unsane, EyeHateGod, Alabama Thunderpussy, Clutch, Unida, Solitude Aeturnus, Unorthodox, Sour Vein, Isis, Soilent Green, Karma to Burn, Nebula, Penance, Raging Slab, Warhorse, Agalloch, Thrones, etc, etc. After that, a period of hibernation was in effect. That is until 2009 when Witch Mountain would re-surface with an addition to the band, the soulful and soaring female vocalist Uta Plotkin.

This is the first time “South Of Salem” sees its CD release to help spread awareness for Witch Mountain’s brand of sludgy, Sabbath-like, dirgy, bluesy, soulful doom even further through Profound Lore Records. Along with imminent touring (the band recently finished a West Coast tour with Wino’s new band Premonition 13), the band will enter the studio this spring to record the follow-up to “South Of Salem” which will be released this summer likewise through Profound Lore Records and will make a big impact on today’s doom metal scene.

SORROW AND EXTINCTION

Band:PALLBEARER
Album:SORROW AND EXTINCTION
Label:Profound Lore
Format:CD
Genre:Stoner/Doom/Occult/Sludge Metal

Even though they’ve only been around a couple of years, PALLBEARER (hailing from Little Rock Arkansas) have already generated a huge buzz within the doom metal scene in their short existence as a band, and never before has a new band within doom metal gained such hype as PALLBEARER have. All this done with their three-song 2010 demo which in itself made a big impact within the doom metal scene, the demo in which the band pressed a limited 300 unit run on cassette that sold out almost instantly.

By encompassing the more traditional metal style of their brand of doom, PALLBEARER’s sound takes cue from such legendary doom metal bands as Candlemass, Trouble, and Warning along with a ‘70s prog influence likewise that finds its way into the band’s epic yet sorrowful odes. Through powerful melodies, epic and somber passages of gloom, and with the stand out soaring vocals from vocalist Brett Campbell (who sounds like a young Ozzy Osbourne in his prime), PALLBEARER’s debut album shall immediately throw the four-piece right into the doom metal spotlight as one of America’s mightiest exports within the genre.

“Sorrow And Extinction” is the best traditional doom metal album to be released since Warning’s “Watching From A Distance”

BURY THE LIGHT

Band:PHARAOH
Album:BURY THE LIGHT
Label:Cruz Del Sur
Format:CD
Genre:Metal

The new album from American metal group PHARAOH is an affirming cry to those who know that things are not what they seem. Entitled “Bury the Light”, the album centers musically on the darker undertones of the band's previous output, emphasizing as always the elegant and vigorous guitar work of Matt Johnsen and the unmatched power of vocalist Tim Aymar. These elements combine to invoke compelling, radiant melodies, which in turn lure the listener to experience the album's deeper dynamics and complex corners. The album may require some patience from a listener more attuned to PHARAOH's tradition of rousing, brilliant heavy metal, as found on its 2003 debut, “After the Fire”, and on the 2006 follow-up “The Longest Night”. Nevertheless, the new album's musical and lyrical threads have clear ties to fan favorite “Be Gone”. As composers, the members of PHARAOH combined in still more different ways to create several songs, yet they still retained their individual and perhaps now-recognizable authorship in the case of others. The result is an album with a familiar core but with unexpected pathways to new moments in the PHARAOH sound. As always, the album features lyrical contributions from all four band-members, and their protagonists again confront a host of villains both real and imagined. Some come away victorious, and others must accept defeat. Bury the Light is a call to PHARAOH fans and to heavy metal fans everywhere to accept this challenge, raise your voices, and stride into action. Features Tim Aymar of Control Denied (Nuclear Blast/Relapse) fame on vocals!

PORTAL OF SORROW - LTD EDITION

Band:XASTHUR
Album:PORTAL OF SORROW - LTD EDITION
Label:VIVA HATE
Format:CD
Genre:Black Metal

During the bands history, Xasthur released 8 full-length albums, as well as numerous demos and EP’s and worked with labels such as HYDRA HEAD RECORDS and SOUTHERN LORD. And it finally ended with the album “Portal of Sorrow” coming on June 24th 2011, this album featured a folk singer by the name of Marissa Nadler and it turned out to be an unconventional ending to the band. It had always been debatable which ‘genre’ of music to categorize Xasthur under; some say black metal yet some have very different interpretations of the music. The needing of a category was never important to Xasthur because the band was inspired by several other sounds of music outside of the black metal clique’.

This limited Box Set version is ultra limited to one pressing of just x500 copies worldwide and includes: • Blackened handmade and hand numbered box with thick and heavy inlay • The Portal Of Sorrow CD with alternate label layout • An exclusive 7” with the tracks of the Orosius split CD releases ages ago / on black vinyl.

NOW - LP

Band:KIM JUNG MI
Album:NOW - LP
Label:LION PRODUCTIONS
Format:VINYL LP
Genre:Psych/Garage Reissues

180 gram Vinyl LP pressing, in a heavy old 1960’s style “tip-on” jacket, with OBI and insert, enclosed in a re-sealable mylar bag, of this remarkable companion release to the recent much-heralded Light in the Attic label Shin Joong Hyun “Beautiful Rivers and Mountains” compilation.

At the dawn of the 1970’s, South Korea’s rock music scene was at its zenith. Much of the reason for this was the god-like musical touch of guitar wizard, songwriter, producer, and arranger Shin Joong Hyun. For this album, he took a young girl named Kim Jung Mi, and transformed her from a wallflower student into a folk-psych chanteuse in record time (if Francoise Hardy is the Marianne Faithful of France, then Kim Jung Mi is, I suppose, the Francoise Hardy of Korea). The ten songs on Now were written and recorded during 1973 with a firm mandate to create a truly psychedelic sound experience. On each number, Shin Joong Hyun and his backing group laid down pure emotion on tape. Mr. Shin’s fuzz guitar weaves in and out of the tracks, interlaced with his own poetic musings on nature (spring, sun, flowers, rain, and wind), all else in the world apart from Kim Jung Mi’s soothing voice and insistent bass that crouches and creeps, depending on its mood, displaced. This raw feeling, combined with Kim Jung Mi’s seductive, expressive vocals and empathetic string orchestration, resulted in an album that is nothing short of awe-inspiring. Mr. Shin’s ethereal cover photo—the blue graininess of the sky dripping into fading clouds, with Kim Jung Mi surrounded on her sky-high isolated mountaintop by flowers—is the perfect image to represent what is, without a doubt, one of the best psychedelic albums ever created. Our version of this quintessence of psychedelia features Korean/English lyric translations, rare photos, re-mastered audio, and comprehensive liner notes by Kevin “Sipreano” Howes and Shin Joong Hyun expert Jae-Myeong Ro (director of the Korean Classical Music Record Museum, and author of the book Shin Joong Hyun and Beautiful Country. The 180 gram vinyl version of “Now” comes in a deluxe old-style jacket, with OBI, and has a full color insert with liner notes and rare photos, and great stories about Shin Joong Hyun and Kim Jung Mi’s continuing place of prominence in the Korean music scene.

REFUGE - LP

Band:HEAVEN AND EARTH
Album:REFUGE - LP
Label:LION PRODUCTIONS
Format:LP
Genre:Psych/Garage Reissues

Limited Vinyl LP edition of 750 copies, packaged in a deluxe 1960’s style tip-on gatefold jacket, with an insert.

This reissue has been a long time coming, in no small part because we wanted it to be perfect. We’re happy to finally be able to announce the re-release of this psychedelic folk/funk beauty from 1973, featuring the gorgeous voices of Pat Gefell and Jo D. Andrews (and produced by Space Age percussionist/composer Dick Schory for his short-lived but influential Ovation Records imprint). At one time this was an album completely unknown outside of Chicago, where the label was based; but these days, word gets around, and tracks like 'Feel The Spirit' and 'Jenny' have been making the rounds on the DJ circuit. No matter what your musical taste is—psych-folk, funk, soft rock—this LP seems to have something special to offer. This is due in part to notable backing from veterans like bassist Phil Upchurch (Curtis Mayfield, Otis Rush, Rotary Connection, Dorothy Ashby, Groove Holmes, and Cannonball Adderly), and space age pop maven Bobby Christian on drums and percussion. But primarily, the perfection that this album emanates is due to the clear voices and intelligent songs crafted by Gefell and Andrews. The whole album is stunning, showcasing a wistful and mystical vibe that acts as an intersection of the airy pop folk of Linda Perhacs, the work of The Poppy Family, and that of Wendy & Bonnie. Our Lion Productions replica LP version comes in an old 1960’s style tip-on gatefold jacket with lyrics printed inside, and includes an insert packed with band history and rare photos. It is a quality vinyl pressing, newly mastered from the original tapes; the sad news: this LP version is limited to 750 copies.

ON BLONDE

Band:BLACK PUSSY
Album:ON BLONDE
Label:BURNSIDE
Format:CD
Genre:Stoner/Doom/Occult/Sludge Metal

If Hendrix had lived, he probably would have ended up recording Black Pussy’s On Blonde in 1971 as a kerosene- soaked hard rock warning against the commercial, pretentious pop overkill to come. Black Pussy is the sound of a dirty, immense engine coming down a two-lane blacktop; a trip fueled by the roar of a 1967-purchased bong in the back of a 1972 Nova. For a long, lovely, midnight desert ride, it makes a stunning companion, jaw- grindingly full of dangerous ideas snug in cigarette-burned red leather car seats.

"The band is very rooted, full of attitude and extremely indie, making them an exciting band to watch out for in the future. On Blonde is a great first effort. – Rockstar Weekly They nail it, whatever it is. What they're doing on this record is not really "heavy" at all, but, I'd surmise that's not what they're going for either. Think Fireball Ministry, as opposed to the aforementioned Monster Magnet, or maybe, if you're feeling retro, more Grand Funk Railroad than Deep Purple, but a lot of fun nonetheless." – Impose Magazine
