ON THE WAY TO EDEN

Band:EDEN ROSE
Album:ON THE WAY TO EDEN
Label:LION PRODUCTIONS
Format:CD
Genre:Psych/Garage Reissues

It might be easy to think of Eden Rose as simply a first version of famed French progressive band Sandrose. Both bands had the same musicians; both existed at nearly the same moment in time (c. 1970). But Eden Rose is now seen, quite rightly, as something unique, a chimera from the misty past, a time during which the winds of change were blowing on the fixed universe of music. Rules were blown away, stagnant structures were swept aside, and musical conventions emancipated, this freshness and spontaneity the essence of a style that hadn’t yet been formalised. - The result was this batch of psych-inspired, decidedly grooving, upbeat instrumental tracks, with wailing (at times) fuzzed-out guitar and distinguished Hammond organ aplenty, over driving beats. A unique sound: brilliant, bright, and singing from the first note to the last. And man, if my ears don’t deceive me, the main theme from ‘Walking In the Sea’ (before it spins off into Jimi Hendrix territory) sure sounds like a lovely jazzy riff on Serge Gainsbourg’s ‘Je t'aime... moi non plus,’ which had been released the year before this album hit the racks. Two bonus tracks are from the band’s only single that contained non-LP tracks. Booklet has the band’s story in English and French, and is printed on FSC recycled, chlorine-free, 100% post-consumer fiber paper, manufactured using biogas energy.

SUPERKRAUT - LIVE AT STAGGES HOTEL

Band:MYTHOS
Album:SUPERKRAUT - LIVE AT STAGGES HOTEL
Label:SIREENA
Format:CD
Genre:Prog Rock

The career of MYTHOS been similar to that of Tangerine Dream and Klaus Schulze, also from West Berlin. They also began working as a rock band in the line up of guitar, drums, bass, keyboards and vocals. Even as they released their first record on the cult label OHR, and they later switched from rock to Electronic music. After 1979, mastermind Stephan Kaske continued as a soloist under the name of MYTHOS and is even today still successful with his synthesizers on the road.

At the gig in Stagge's Hotel in Osterholz-Scharmbeck near Bremen in March 1976 MYTHOS was still fully in the Krautrock element. The songs of the then fresh album "Dreamlab" formed the foundation, plus additional titles that should never make it to one of the studio albums. They can be heard here for the very first time. Stephan Kaske was even amazed when he learned of the existence of the tape recordings, but agreed after careful listening with a publication. A truly wise decision!

ROCK IN DEUTSCH

Band:FRANZ K
Album:ROCK IN DEUTSCH
Label:SIREENA
Format:CD
Genre:Kraut / Space Rock

The legendary hearse album on CD with bonus track! "We make rock music with German lyrics." With these words the trio of FRANZ K.( Mick Hannas (guitar), Peter Josefus (bass, vocals) and Stefan Josefus (drums) ) brought it to the point and earned a loyal fan base in Germany. On the road since 1969 the power trio made evey concert into a happening. "We want to ensure that you listen to us, thinking about our lyrics and maybe do something." These were the Seventies!

Following the debut album "Senseman", "Rock in Deutsch" (Rock in German) was published in 1973 by Zebra. With the hearse, which adorns the front cover of the album, Franz K. was constantly on the road in Germany. Similar to its British counterpart, the Edgar Broughton Band, social criticism was packed in German texts. The band shot agains militarism, consumer greed, injustice in the workplace and met precisely the taste of students and apprentices then. Today you have to smile quietly over the choice of words, then the band was so far forward and was one of the most popular live bands.

GROOVE CLUB VOL 1 : LA CONFISERIE MAGIQUE

Band:VARIOUS ARTISTS
Album:GROOVE CLUB VOL 1 : LA CONFISERIE MAGIQUE
Label:LION PRODUCTIONS
Format:CD
Genre:Psych/Garage Reissues

With his Weston shoes, a slim-fitting suit by Renoma and his haircut modelled on those of Anglo-Saxons musicians appearing on French Eps, Fabrice dreams of Carnaby Street and the Sunset Strip. He is not alone: there’s his sister Stéphanie, 16, who wears a fringe, a mock Courrèges dress, a pink Shetland pullover and white boots. Stéphanie reads Salut Les Copains and Mademoiselle Age Tendre, which both fuel her passion for Françoise Hardy, Zouzou, Twiggy and the Beatles. The Groove Club is happy to present twenty-two records that we dug out as a tribute to Fabrice’s kinky faves. We imagine those magic years 1966-71 (with two inclusions from 1976 & 77) to have been as you can hear it here — truly decadent pop-sike, as beautiful as the cathedral of Evry... whether it's the arch-hippie Lolita taking us beyond the limits of pop music, singing songs which make one dream of Anicée Alvina riding her bicycle in a red dress... or whether it's sunny and stunning, or brooding and tinged with sadness. And we sense that, paradoxical as it may seem, although we have imagined a parallel cosmos to the Grande Heures of pop culture, we are not far from the truth. The 24 page CD booklet is chock full of information, sharing Fabrice's story, as well as providing information about all of the tracks on this painstakingly curated volume of our celebrated Groove Club series. Popisme fantastique!

LOOK IN THE WINDOW

Band:JARDINE
Album:LOOK IN THE WINDOW
Label:LION PRODUCTIONS
Format:CD
Genre:Psych/Garage Reissues

Jardine’s album was recorded in three glorious weeks in June 1969, at Sounds Aquarian Studios, a stone’s throw from that justifiably famous fashion hub, Carnaby Street. The sessions were fun. Polydor was supposed to release the album. Musicians dropped in to say "hello" and ended up on the record (uncredited)—among them Peter Frampton, Andrew "Andy" Bown (Herd and Status Quo), and Brian Appleyard (drummer from East of Eden). Singer Mickey Cox had been in Robert Plant’s pre-Led Zeppelin group The Band of Joy—it was Cox, in fact, who became their singer when Plant left the band. But suddenly, thanks to band management problems, the LP was shelved. Keith Law, who had written all of the songs, joined Velvett Fogg for their only album, and Jardine was forgotten. Now, forty years later, you can be among the first to discover the brooding excellence of these tracks, music both strange and sinister, with moments of fragile beauty. There are some very pretty songs here (haunting melodies abound), but there is no escaping the dark side of life (‘Masochists of Strangulation,’ ‘Execution of the Child,’ and the monumental dirge ‘Blackbirds of Jardine’, which tells of self-same birds, and the fact that they will “destroy you, and leave you pain, pain, pain”), songs perhaps more akin to the band Comus than to anything else we have encountered from the psychedelic era. There are heavy guitar solos, churning organ, flute, and flowing sitar for good measure. A 16-page booklet includes a band history lyrics, and comments on the songs by Keith Law. A lost jewel of late-1960's UK psychedelia, from a short-lived but charismatic band!

GADJISTAN ZIZANY

Band:GADJO
Album:GADJISTAN ZIZANY
Label:GADJO MUSICA
Format:CD
Genre:world/new age

Gadjistan Zizany starts like dynamite with a Balkanesque-polka-boogaloo- ska celebration of saucepan banging protests in Catalan and Spanish and continues with an unstoppable groove through the 14 songs composed by the 7 immigrant members of the Barcelona band. There are tales of travel and lost lovers in Mexico, a cacophony of marimba players, pots and pans, mariarchi melodies, kafka boogaloo, broken shoes, sirens, sailors, squatters, skallywags, old ladies breaking and entering, a Jung Freud, zubrovka romance, paranoia, punk gardeners, and pianos falling from the sky. Gadjo’s fourth album is exuberant and eclectic, raucous and tender. An explosion of voice, horns, flute, clarinet, accordion, doublebass, guitar and percussion. The multiple styles of gadjo come together to forge the diverse but not disparate characteristic Gadjistan flavour. The Cumbias have been balkanized, the Skas whipped into boogaloos, swings kidnapped by drum and bass. Gadjo’s music has matured yet remains as refreshing, energetic and playful as ever, still with colours of their roots in acoustic street music but more jumping and having it than ever.
