THIS WAY UP

Band:BRIAN RAY
Album:THIS WAY UP
Label:BURNSIDE
Format:CD
Genre:Rock

Award winning songwriter, singer and musician Brian Ray, best known as the ultimate sideman guitarist/bassist for Paul McCartney, takes a step out front in the spotlight to release a new solo album This Way Up. Brian's second solo album, following Mondo Magneto released in 2005, can be described as rich, fun rock with hooks galore and lots of guitars supporting a classic yet modern writing style. Brian Ray has been an in-demand session/touring musician and hit songwriter for acts such as Etta James, Smokey Robinson, Rod Stewart, Kelly Clarkson and Chris Cornell to name a few. But for the past decade Brian has been touring the world's largest venues and stadiums in Paul McCartney's band. "I have been on one hell of a ride with this band. The last 8 weeks alone have been amazing, with 110,000 screaming fans in Mexico City, playing IN the White House for President Obama and the First Family, then performing at the Isle of Wight Festival, to name some big moments for us recently. Paul continues to inspire a new generation of writers and bands. I find myself in a catbird seat with a great view from ringside. It is a joy to now share some of my own music." "I Found You" was written by Brian and Oliver Leiber (son of Jerry Leiber of the legendary songwriting team, Leiber & Stoller). "It is a rambunctious, upbeat song, an expression from the best part of me, looking in every possible place for the love and peace we all want... finding it right before my eyes, where I least expected it!" The song features a guitar marching band with approximately 40 guitars having a guitar tantrum, along with a big marching drum beat. Notably the song also features some of Ray's rock star pals: Scott Shriner (Weezer), drums and bass by Pete Thomas, Davey Faragher (Elvis Costello s band), Adam MacDougal (The Black Crows) on wild Wurlitzer piano.

WESTERN COUNTRY

Band:CALEB KLAUDER
Album:WESTERN COUNTRY
Label:BURNSIDE
Format:CD
Genre:Country

"Should really be ‘Northwestern Country,’ as Klauder’s based in Portland, OR, but, fair enough, since the mass exodus of California country luminaries like Mike Stinson, Portland and Seattle do seem to be the new West. While enjoying a fair amount of success as vocalist/mandolin player with old-timey Foghorn Stringband, Klauder’s also been pursuing a parallel solo career, exploring early honky tonk and bluegrass styles, though his first album, Sings Out (Padre, 2000) seems to have been swept under the rug. His second, Dangerous Mes & Poisonous Yous (Padre, 2007), a very fine piece of work, got some attention but he didn’t start promoting it until earlier this year, when he signed on with the same Pacific NW outfit that brought us the fabulous Zoe Muth of Seattle (a recent Muth/Klauder doublebill must have something else). Klauder’s inspirational timeframe for his six splendid originals can be gauged from the six covers, Satisfied Mind, a #1 hit for Porter Wagoner in 1955, Charlie & Ira Louvin’s My Baby Came Back, GB Grayson & Henry Whittier’s Joking Henry, What Was I Supposed To Do? and Deep River by Paul Williams, who played mandolin with Jimmy Martin’s Sunny Mountain Boys in the 50s, and bluegrass pioneer Bill Reid’s In My Heart I Love You Yet. What makes this package special isn’t just Klauder’s dusty, authentic vocal styling—he’s been compared to Hank Williams, Charlie Monroe, Dwight Yoakam, Townes Van Zandt (?) and Doug Sahm, though what I’m hearing is a healthy dose of Lefty Frizzell—but also his superb production. This album just plain and simple sounds right, as close as you’ll get to a 50s LP without actually touching vinyl." -  John Conquest, 3rd Coast Music, September, 2010

BENDING MIRRORS

Band:CELILO
Album:BENDING MIRRORS
Label:BURNSIDE
Format:CD
Genre:Rock

Celilo's debut release Bending Mirrors pushes the boundries of Americana with its hushed radiator glow, languid tempos, liquid melodies, burnt molasses vocals, eagle-eyed observation, and Steinbeckian lyrics. They evoke 70's Neil Young but also Pink Floyd's Dark Side of Moon with their on-a-dime melodic turnarounds, crushing ballads and searing breakdowns, they've become alchemists at blending lush sun dappled pop forms with the heartbreak and high lonesome twang that has always marked great country music.

HIT IT N QUIT IT

Band:CURTIS SALGADO AND TERRY ROBB
Album:HIT IT N QUIT IT
Label:BURNSIDE
Format:CD
Genre:Blues

Consummate singer-songwriter-harmonica player Curtis Salgado has been a wellkept secret for years. Formerly lead vocalist for the Grammy-winning band Roomful of Blues, and later with Robert Cray, the Stilettos, and Santana, Salgado boasts exceptional phrasing and vocal fluency, from blues to rock to funk to soul to gospel, which are a delight to serious musicians and fans alike. After his critically acclaimed solo efforts "Curtis Salgado" (1991), "More Than You Can Chew" (1995), Salgado teamed up with NW Blues great Terry Robb to produce “Hit it ‘n Quit it “ in 1997. It’s a down and dirty funky blues record that has had limited availability until now.

THE HEARTS WE BROKE ON THE WAY TO THE SHOW

Band:THE IDLE HANDS
Album:THE HEARTS WE BROKE ON THE WAY TO THE SHOW
Label:BURNSIDE
Format:CD
Genre:Alt Rock

"The lead singer is one of those tall skinny indie heartthrobs who sings aksant into the mike in pure britpop style, but the guitars and the drums are pure indie rock. Loaded, their standout track, is simple, catchy and dancable but who needs complicated when you just want to rock out? The Secretary is intense guitars and wailing vocals reminiscent of 1990s British rockers Suede, mixed with the swagger of early Oasis, and dressed in better clothes" - AboutMinneapolis.Com

THE CUTTING ROOM FLOOR

Band:JED DAVIS
Album:THE CUTTING ROOM FLOOR
Label:BURNSIDE
Format:CD
Genre:Alt Rock

The bittersweet pop songs of New York native Jed Davis have been recorded by artists from Daniel Johnston to the Ramones. In July 2008, Davis recorded 14 songs for a solo album at Chicago's Electrical Audio with engineer Steve Albini under the working title Shoot the Piano Player. As is customary for Albini recordings, the entire album was captured live to tape as performed by Davis and drummer Joe Abbatantuono. Here's his first solo album in a decade, executive produced by Dave Fridmann (Flaming Lips, MGMT, Black Moth Super Rainbow), with a cover by legendary psychedelic poster artist Victor Moscoso. The result is an atmospheric rock masterpiece in which lo-fi sounds nestle neatly into high-concept audiophile production numbers, and laughter and tears share a pillow.

UNDER THE STREETLIGHTS

Band:DAZZ BAND
Album:UNDER THE STREETLIGHTS
Label:BURNSIDE
Format:CD
Genre:Soul/Funk/Disco

Best known for the huge 1982 hit "Let It Whip" and other funky party grooves from the early 80s, the Dazz Band certainly was taking a chance by making an album in 1995. Despite some lineup changes and the fact that funk was very dated by 1995, The Dazz Band manages to create a pleasing hip-hop soul album that has a surprising robustness to it. Though not the band's signature style, this album definitely sounds more like a carefully planned project, rather than a bunch of has-beens trying desperately to stay in the game. Back in the day funk-soul music from a classic group who created dance-able jazz” with songs like Tryin’ To get My Groove On & Under The Street Lights, this disc is in the Dazz Band tradition of very funky, jazzy tracks with great vocals.

AMERICAN RECLAMATION

Band:DUST ON THE BREAKERS
Album:AMERICAN RECLAMATION
Label:RAINBOOT
Format:CD
Genre:Alt Rock

There is no debating that Dust On The Breakers have a refinement that marks out their debut release as a masterpiece amongst a raft of far less noteworthy musical outpourings that are no doubt cluttering your desk at this time. Core members of the band, Jeff Linsenmaier (The Czars), Jeff Davenport (d.biddle), and Tim Husmann (Crooked Fingers) – ably assisted by a rotation of contributors drawn in from The Fray, 16 Horsepower, Woven Hand et al - have been active as Dust On The Breakers since their initial meeting in 2006. Thankfully, four years on, the collision of understandably busy touring schedules and band commitments eventually culminated in the authoring of the emotionally electric American Reclamation. Recorded in Denver and mixed by acclaimed producer Martin Feveyear (REM / Crooked Fingers / Damien Jurardo / Jesse Sykes), the record is a musical purge; a wild abandonment of former loves and lovers, a forward march to new, uncharted hopes. Its opening track, "Charred Metropolis," introduces vocalist Anna Slade, her voice a demure echo against Linsenmaier's slowcore croon. Likewise, "Quiet Please" is an ambient exploration of atmospherics and rumbling piano parts and "Summer Rain Storms", a triumphant emergence from the record's beautiful, unfathomable depths.
