LAW OF DEVILS LAND

Band:LOUDNESS
Album:LAW OF DEVILS LAND
Label:Krescendo
Format:CD
Genre:Metal

Released on July 21st 1982, the second Loudness album ‘Devil Soldier’ benefited greatly from the creative input of one Daniel McClendon, brother of one time UFO guitarist Tommy McClendon, who was drafted in to help with the sound of the album due to the lack of experienced studio engineers in Japan at the time. As per its predecessor, the album proved a great success in Japan and was awarded the acolade of best metal album of the year by the Japanese record industry. The album was indeed a well crafted affair, with strong songs, punchy production and the ever spectacular Akira Takasaki in effervescent form.

‘Devil Soldier’ is released here on CD for the first time outside of Japan and it has never sounded so good.

END OF THE WORLD

Band:GASKIN
Album:END OF THE WORLD
Label:Krescendo
Format:CD
Genre:Metal

Never the most fashionable of bands but definitely one of the more talented that were around at the time, Gaskin was formed in March, 1980 with Paul Gaskin on guitars and vocals, Dave Norman on drums and Stef Prokopczuk on bass - The band's debut album ‘End Of The World’ was recorded and released in 1981 and it is rightly regarded as one of the early highlights of the NWoBHM. Gaskin were a technically proficient band that wrote and played in a classic style and through a mixture of talent and hard work they made a name for themselves at a time when bands from all over the UK were scrambling to get signed. Gaskin recorded a follow up album ‘No Way Out’ before splitting up only to reform seventeen years later, spurred on by the interest that remained in the band’s music and their inclusion on a number of influential NWoBHM compilation releases. This first album, though, is their finest hour and viewed all these years later it has stood the test of time remarkably well. If you’re hearing it now for the first time, crank it up!

CARETAKER / UNDERSMILE

Band:CARETAKER / UNDERSMILE
Album:CARETAKER / UNDERSMILE
Label:BLINDSIGHT
Format:CD
Genre:Stoner/Doom/Occult/Sludge Metal

Caretaker formed at Alton College, Hampshire in 1998. They began by playing covers at events organised by the college but soon started writing their own material. Shortly after this they circulated a cobbled together demo, and this culminated in their first show at the Farnham Maltings in April 99. They have since then released several records and received extensive play on Radio 1, including the great late John Peel (R.I.P), and have journeyed through music's various pigeon-holes, travelling from indie through post-rock and heading towards a heavier, more progressive sound over the last couple of years.

Undersmile are a Sludgecore/Doom band from Oxford, England. They grew up to the strains of Melvins, Mudhoney etc and are influenced by the slow/heavy sound of the early 90’s as well as bands such as Harvey Milk, early Swans and Pissed Jeans. Their sound is a unique twist on the genre, with the twin vocals of Taz Corona-Brown and Helena Sterne bearing their own mark combined with their ultra-slow downtuned riffing. They have been gaining endless praise recently from followers of the genre, as sellout support slot with Weedeater at the London Underworld and positive reviews of their debut EP “A Sea Of Dead Snakes” from Kerrang, Metal Hammer, Terrorizer and Rocksound will tell.
