LIVE AT ROCKPALAST

Band:BULLFROG
Album:LIVE AT ROCKPALAST
Label:SIREENA
Format:DVD
Genre:Kraut / Space Rock

In 1978 Bullfrog once again toured across Germany and the bordering countries. Final concert of this tour was a recording for Rockpalast Television on December 6th, 1978, in the Westfalenhalle in Dortmund. On stage the hardrock carousel turned around voiceful singer Gerd Hoch, his voice was THE trademark of Bullfrog. On guitar, Sebastian Leitner, who was able to get everybody on his feet. Haralt Kaltenecker on Keyboards impressed the characteristic sound of the group with his scratchy-dirty sound of organ, clavinet, and synthesizer. On top the all-out rhythmband with bass player Robert „Topsy“ Wimmer (also producer of the 2nd vinyl „High in Spirits“) and drummre Achim Wielert (former EPITAPH and BREAKFAST) who rounded up the Heavy sound. Bullfrog presented the most popular songs of all their albums on stage of Rockpalast Unfortunately that night there was a complete breakdown of the monitor system during the whole recording. A real nightmare on such a huge stage like Westfalenhalle in Dortmund. The musicians could not hear each other and the singer could not even hear his own voice…. Against all odds the concert was a success because there were many positive feedbacks by phone at WDR. Especially the song „L.A. Police No.55“, which tells a story about bankrobbing, was requested by the tvviewers. Thus the title has been played in addition to the usual repeats on January 7th, 1979, during a Rockpalast Festival. On DVD for the very first time...

BREAKING BARRIERS

Band:TRIBUTE
Album:BREAKING BARRIERS
Label:SIREENA
Format:CD
Genre:Prog Rock

The Swedish symphonic rock group Tribute made four records during the eighties. Breaking Barriers is their second album, originally recorded and released in 1986. This is the first album where the band is joined by french drummer Pierre Moerlen (ex Gong/Mike Oldfield). The sound was now getting sharper compared to the first album New Views. Breaking Barriers is more in the direction of jazz fusion, even though the more poetic quality of the previous album is still to be heard. One of the songs of the album is "Diesel Enginee", a duet for two bass guitars that became one of the bands hits and was performed on every concert throughout their carreer. CLARIFOIL / NEVER BEEN TO CALIFORNIA

Band:BRONCO BULLFROG
Album:CLARIFOIL / NEVER BEEN TO CALIFORNIA
Label:STATE RECORDS
Format:VINYL 7"
Genre:Garage Punk

Bronco Bullfrog issued a pile of great records across the early part of the century (that’s this one!!!), wowed small crowds in the UK and did amazingly well in Spain. Those who heard and saw ’em fell passionately in love with their “technicolour pop” sound. But it’s all a long time ago now, with their last album seeing the light of day in 2004 and a compilation appearing slightly later on the prestigious Rev-Ola label. What makes Bronco Bullfrog so special and endearing is that both then and now they have never been, or had the slightest inkling to be, fashionable. All obsessive record collectors and pop music fanatics, the trio of Mike Poulson (vocals/guitar), Louis Comfort-Wiggett (bass/vocals) and Andy Morten (drums/vocals) avoid obvious genre mimicking or being a part of any movement. This isn’t Mark E Smith anti-fashion or deconstructionism, but it’s not wear your influences on your sleeve plagiarism either. What the Broncos do so well is to take their inspirations and aspirations and play them hard and with abandon.

These two songs sound as good, if not better, than anything they cut the first time round. “Recording at Sandgate Sound is a dream,” says Andy of State Records’ in-house facility, “albeit a slightly damp, smelly one. Marty and Mole really know their onions and, more importantly, they know their pop music too. We can tell 'em that we want a track to sound like Plastic Penny circa Currency and they know what we mean. I don't really like the sound of any of the old Bronco records but I love the sound of the new stuff, especially 'Clarifoil'.”

BURNING FARM

Shonen Knife's debut. Burning Farm (1983) was the debut album of vocalist and guitarist Naoko Yamano, drummer and backing vocalist Atsuko Yamano, and bassist and vocalist Michie Nakatani, a.k.a. Shonen Knife. A throwback to 70's power-pop a la the Ramones or Devo, with some Beatles mixed in, and titles and lyrics that are either silly, disjointed, and/or surreal a la the B-52s. Most of the songs here are in Japanese, but the English translations are included.

PRETTY LITTLE BAKA GUY

Band:SHONEN KNIFE
Album:PRETTY LITTLE BAKA GUY
Label:PLANETWORKS
Format:CD
Genre:Punk / Proto Punk

Osaka trio Shonen Knife's 1984 album and their sophomore effort!

Shonen Knife, which transliterates as Shonen Naifu, literally “Boy Knife,” is an all-female Japanese pop-punk band formed in Osaka, Japan, in 1981. Heavily influenced by 1960s girl groups, pop bands, The Beach Boys, and early punk rock acts, such as the Ramones, the trio crafts stripped-down songs expressing infectious melodies and simplistic, exuberant lyrics sung both in Japanese and English. Despite their pop-oriented nature, the trio maintains a distinctly underground garage rock sound rooted in edgy instrumentation and D.I.Y. aesthetics, which over the course of their long career has earned them a solid, worldwide cult following and made avid fans out of seminal ’90s alternative rock acts such as Sonic Youth, Nirvana, and Redd Kross. The band has been credited with making “the international pop underground more international” by “opening it up to bands from Japan”. They have also performed as a Ramones tribute band under the name The Osaka Ramones.

712

Band:SHONEN KNIFE
Album:712
Label:PLANETWORKS
Format:CD
Genre:Punk / Proto Punk

Osaka trio Shonen Knife's FOURTH Album now available again at a super low price! For those of you who are unaware of Shonen Knife, they are a Japanese female rock band that emerged in the early 80's. Their first three albums are considered lo-fi classics. The sound of these albums is almost like a cross between the Ramones and the Shaggs: simple, unpretentious, amateurish, quirky, joyous pop (that fans of the Vaselines, Beat Happening, and Daniel Johnston should love). However, the band is probably best known for their later incarnation: a hyper-cute sugar rush of wellproduced pop punk. This started with "Let's Knife" (which featured reworkings of songs from their first 3 albums), and peaked with the excellent "Rock Animals" and "Brand New Knife."

Now available again at a super low price!
