DEAD MAN

Band:DEAD MAN
Album:DEAD MAN
Label:Crusher
Format:VINYL LP
Genre:Stoner/Doom/Occult/Sludge Metal

This highly acclaimed debut album by Swedish band Dead Man was originally released in early 2006. After high demand a re-print is now up for release on Crusher (cc:Vidunder,Spiders,Hoisont...) as a Black vinyl LP

“Goin’ Over the Hill,” the lead track on Dead Man’s self titled debut, is all sorts of retro classic rock awesomeness. The main riff is killer, and when the drums swell and singer Kristoffer Sjoedahl belts out, “I’m going over the hill, to see my baby,” you know you’re in for a treat. It’s a definite “Hell yeah!” moment. Comparisons can be drawn to Witchcraft, another band who poses the question “What era are these guys from anyway?” But Dead Man is less enamoured with doom and is more prone to folksy moments and Grateful Dead inspired hippy rock amidst their proto-psych jams. And while I’ve never been a fan of the Dead save for a few songs, Dead Man sits well with me. It’s buoyant, feel-good music that places playing and song craft above all else.” -John Pegoraro (Stonerrock.com)

This is the brand new full length from Portland, Oregon's Gaytheist. The album is 12 tracks and 27 minutes of pummeling yet melodic punk-metal that Spin.com has hailed as "combining the howl of the Jesus Lizard with the pop-leaning mania of Torche to thrilling effect". Add to it a live attack that has been rendering audiences throughout the Northwest deaf and dumb with excitement, this could be the year that the rest of the world starts to pay heed to what Gaytheist has to offer.

BITES RITES

Band:RABBITS
Album:BITES RITES
Label:GOOD TO DIE
Format:LP & DOWNLOAD
Genre:Punk / Hardcore

What to do about this Rabbits problem? When last we heard from this Portland aggregation they had released their first full-length LP, Lower Forms, "totally absurd... in the best possible way" [A.V. Club]. All Music Guide said "in time, one could see this making a lot more sense." Bites Rites, the new release on Good to Die Records, opens a deep portal into the mind of the superorganism that is Rabbits. And something in that mind is not right. Like many that came before them, with success and worldwide fame came the predictable descent into bitterness, jealousy, paranoia, and eventual madness. The toll taken is obvious in both the sound and substance of the new record. Rabbits descended down into a Felony Flats basement with someone named Fester to ratchet up the sonic insanity. Guitars became grisly fried noisemakers and drums an off-the-rails machine shop (still no bass-how is it so HEAVY?!) with vocals from some deranged lunatic backed by a Family-spawned youth crew.

FALSE DANCERS

Band:MONOGAMY PARTY
Album:FALSE DANCERS
Label:GOOD TO DIE
Format:LP & DOWNLOAD
Genre:Punk / Proto Punk

The original trio of Monogamy Party was a powerful enough thing. Just take another spin through their neck snapping debut EP Pus City -- a record the Seattle Weekly called a "gritty, well-crafted noise rock wonderland" -- right now, if you don't believe us. Monogamy Party is now a foursome, adding guitars to the mix, and the results are downright explosive. On False Dancers, they burn things to the ground and build back anew on the ashes, using influences like early Sonic Youth, Butthole Surfers, and Arab on Radar as their blueprints.

NO NEVER!

Band:DEADKILL
Album:NO NEVER!
Label:GOOD TO DIE
Format:LP & DOWNLOAD
Genre:Punk / Hardcore

Recorded with the mighty Matt Bayles (Mastodon, Russian Circles, Sandrider) at his Red Room Recording in Seattle, No, Never! is as unfuckwithable a punk statement as you’re likely to hear this year. The 14 songs are no frills, no bullshit blows against evils both internal and external. Along the way, the band sets itself among the pantheon of other modern punk greats like Ceremony, Fucked Up, and Trash Talk.

VOIGHT KAMPFF

Band:VOIGHT KAMPFF
Album:VOIGHT KAMPFF
Label:Deranged
Format:VINYL LP
Genre:Punk / Hardcore

It is with great pleasure that we offer in collaboration with Rock Bottom Records the debut album by VOIGHTKAMPFF. These 7 songs were originally released as a limited cassette Voight-Kampff began as Run Down in 2005 when Sulier and Swanson-White came together due to a shared love of darker moodier punk. After both had been in hardcore bands they decided to try something a little weirder. A 2 song 45 was done after passing songs back and forth and was belatedly released in 2012 on Baltimore’s Firestarter Records. At this point the songs were already written for their debut full-length and the two decided to make a clean break from RD with a name change and stripped down format which would involve only the two of them for recording purposes. VK has played roughly a show a year since 07 recruiting different friends to flesh out live line-ups including Doom Town’s Ashley Hohman and Tom Valli, Bryan Clarkson and Shaun Morrissey from The Humanoids, Matty Coonfield of Bug Chaser and Tone Rodent, Phil Schwarz of Rock Bottom Records, Ted Howard of the 86’ed, and Brad Stiffler of Condominium. The duo is currently at work writing for their second LP and has plans to finally tour and increase their activities.

SAFEWORDS

Band:SAFEWORDS
Album:SAFEWORDS
Label:Deranged
Format:LP
Genre:Punk / Hardcore

Taking nods from SISTERS OF MERCY and RED LORRY, YELLOW LORRY, SAFEWORDS burn the drum machines and chorus pedals on the altar and combine equal parts WIPERS and CHRISTIAN DEATH to bring you (post-mortem) 11 tracks of catchy death(rock)-(post)punk that will have you locked in your bedroom flipping this piece of wax over and over again ‘til the sky’s gone out...ian curtis singing for the Wipers?...

2ND

Band:PLEASURE LEFTISTS
Album:2ND
Label:Deranged
Format:LP
Genre:Punk / Hardcore

On the follow-up to their 2 song EP on Katorga Works (which features both songs off the EP), Pleasure Leftists have expanded upon the moody post-punk they're known for. With these songs, however, the chorusy bass is much more prominent than on their 12 inch debut EP and brings a darker feel to the sound. On first listen it seems easy to compare that sound to that of bands like Masshysteri or Terrible Feelings, but give it a few more spins and you begin to find a lot more depth and weirdness than the often straight-forward approach of the aforementioned. The most notable standout of PL for me is the rare and fiercely original vocal approach of lead singer Haley. Prior to being recruited, Haley was known for her radio show, and since has begun her own solo project called Kiernan Paradise, which sheds light on a more electronic synthy background. Her often incoherent banshee croons set a mood which envelops and entrances you, and the guitar and bassist are smart enough to back it up subtly and simply with jangly leads and dutiful rhythms. Not at all what one might expect from two former members of 9 Shocks Terror, but good enough to make you forget any comparison or dissection. "Hunger Split" accents the rest of the songs perfectly with its surprising brightness in the midst of the otherwise-broody record. The ensuing "Not Over" conjures some Twee elements with its soft loose guitars and driving bass.
