SOFA

Band:MIRAMUNDO
Album:SOFA
Label:CPL MUSIC
Format:CD
Genre:WORLDMUSIC

How many activities can you do during some quality “sofa time”? You can chill out and relax, chitchat with friends, binge, watch Netflix whilst devouring popcorn, or you can “simply” enjoy life listening to MiraMundo and their welltravelled music. The Barcelona-based quintet is back with their second album, fittingly titled “Sofá”, and once again you will go through a journey of sounds and emotions. In the past few years, the musicians have taken their music around the world, playing shows in Latin and South America, as well as Eastern, North and Mediterranean Europe. Each stopover is a new style and tradition to absorb and embrace. Beside their former members, Luiz Murá Brazil/Portugal/Japan/Italy), Ernesto Vargas (Mexico/Nicaragua), MarinaCurbelo (Catalunya/Canarian Islands), Agostino Aragno (Italy) and Jabu Morales (Brazil), each stopover is a new collaboration and musician to share the stage with. From Venezuelan Juan Pablo Rodríguez Berbín, Serbian Goran Milosevic to and Catalonian Gloria Maurel and Peruvian Jankely Aguila for example. That’s why Sofá sounds so variegated and flavourful. There’s the inspiriting passion of Forró and bittersweet intensity of Flamenco, there’s the melancholic scent of Cacharpaya and jazzy smoothness of Samba. There are the many souls of the intoxicating Catalonian city and open-minded and welcoming perspectives on the world of the band members. There’s some vibrant songwriting and bright musicianship, but first and foremost, there’s an album that never sounds ordinary, which is able to surprise and enrich you track after track. Turn on your speaker and sit by MiraMundo’s “Sofá”, and you’ll suddenly find yourself laying comfortably on your cozy multicultural sound and reveling in the heartwarming musical beats of life.

FOLK AND GREAT TUNES FROM NORWAY

Band:VARIOUS ARTISTS
Album:FOLK AND GREAT TUNES FROM NORWAY
Label:NORDIC NOTES
Format:2CD
Genre:FOLK NORWAY

Dear friends of interesting music, with the help of this new compilation, I would like to give you another short glimpse into the lively Norwegian folk music scene. Some of the artists have already been introduced on the former compilation "Nordic Notes Vol. 3: Folk from Norway". But of course I want to share the latest developments with you!
So there are lots of new things to discover: The Trio Raabygg, the Shootingstar Julietnorth or the "arctic fairy" Elin Kaven. But also wild tunes from the Sami lands with Vassvik, wonderful female voices with Eplemöya Songlag and many more. All these artists have been touring the world for a number of years now and are often performing at important festivals. After visiting the Norwegian "Folkelarm" festival several times now and after the exciting invitation to the first "Northern Expo 2018" in Svalbard on Spitsbergen, I just had to pass the impressions on to you! Unfortunately, all artists and bands could not be considered here. So there is only one thing that can be done: To release the next compilation "Nordic Notes: Folk from Norway" in two or three years! Christian Pliefke, Nordic Notes

SACRAMENTAL DEATH QUALIA

Band:HAUNTER
Album:SACRAMENTAL DEATH QUALIA
Label:I VOIDHANGER
Format:CDD
Genre:PROGRESSIVE DEATH METAL

Based in Texas and active since 2013, HAUNTER have diligently permeated their way into the metal underground due to their intense live activity and body of work. Their releases include the acclaimed full-length debut, “Thrinodίa” (2016) and splits with Crawl, Sovereign and Black Vice. Indomitable with a maturity, aggression and complexity, “Sacramental Death Qualia” is the expected step forward in terms of both expressivity and personality. This release is going to impose them on the same audience of bands like Gorguts, Immolation and early Opeth: bands that become reminiscent throughout the album. Mastered by Brendan Sloan (Convulsing), “Sacramental Death Qualia” is a true experience of conscience's awakening; a progressive album where the unrelenting violence of death metal and the obscurity of black metal are sewn together by mind-bending, complex arrangements that are the epitome of change. HAUNTER's compositions constantly morph and evolve with never ending creativity, chasing forms at the same time ferocious and elegant, destructive and gentle. Acoustic passages of ethereal beauty, where delicate guitars draw melancholic and autumnal melodies counterbalance the band's untamable fury during the most frenetic moments. Elijah Tamu's (Abyssal, Temple Nightside, Panegyrist) visionary cover painting enriches an album of great emotional power that impacts the eyes with the same intensity as “Sacramental Death Qualia.”

FALSE CONFESSION

Band:WEEPING SORES
Album:FALSE CONFESSION
Label:I VOIDHANGER
Format:CDD
Genre:DEATH/DOOM METAL

Recorded by Chris Grigg of WOE and mastered by Greg Chandler of ESOTERIC, “False Confession” is the debut album of WEEPING SORES, a doom/death project featuring the talents of Doug Moore (guitars, bass, vocals) and Steve Schwegler (drums) of PYRRHON and SEPUTUS, with Gina Eygenhuysen on violins, a role she has filled for the Oregon sludge band HELL. After a promising EP released in 2017, “False Confession” confirms WEEPING SORES' inspiration, at the same time outdistancing them from easy comparisons with Peaceville's Trimurti of death/doom. “The whole concept of doom/death with a violin can sound pretty cheesy coming from most bands that aren't My Dying Bride,” Doug Moore comments, “but it's a bit of an accident of fate that WEEPING SORES ended up with that combination of sounds. The original concept of the band was pretty different and didn't have a violin, but I happened to meet Gina around when I was starting to write for the project, and she was so gifted on the instrument that I felt compelled to ask if she was interested in collaborating.” After all, Moore and the other band members are only casual fans of the classic Peaceville style, which certainly helped WEEPING SORES get a more personal approach to doom/death. Their music is highly atmospheric, and yet never allowed to slide into melodrama and complacency. Always intense and densely layered with riffs and hooks, “False Confession” is as melancholic and soulwrenching during its most gloomy passages as it is twisted and suffocating during the impressive bursts of pure death metal. A dichotomy perfectly rendered in Caroline Harrison's cover painting: a rotting wound of the flesh, with sick and psychedelic colours which attract and repel at the same time.

MEMOIRS OF A RAT QUEEN

Band:NEPTUNE POWER FEDERATION, THE
Album:MEMOIRS OF A RAT QUEEN
Label:Cruz Del Sur
Format:CD
Genre:METAL/PROTO METAL/OCCULT ROCK

Infectious space rock and metal from Australia, delivered by the one and only Imperial Priestess. Bow to the Imperial Priestess! On ‘Memoirs of a Rat Queen’, Australian psychedelic rock and roll occultists The Neptune Power Federation have arrived to take you on a sonic journey like no other. She came from outer space, a celestial being with supernatural powers, namely, inhuman vocals and a godly stage presence. She is the only one who can make four leather-clad bike-rockers readily dedicate their lives in subservience, ready to serve her in the name of rock and roll. Tales of her existence have already been shared, but there is a new chronicle, one that will shine a light on her trans-dimensional travels and accomplishments. Its name is ‘Memoirs of a Rat Queen’. Its subject? The Imperial Priestess. Her band? The Neptune Power Federation. Formed in Australia in 2012, The Neptune Power Federation originally started as a studio project with a singer based in the United States. Their trajectory was forever changed when Imperial Priestess Screaming Loz Sutch joined the band in 2015. The Neptune Power Federation, who are rounded out by guitarists Inverted CruciFox and Search & DesTroy, bassist Jaytanic Ritual and drummer Mr. Styx, soon honed in on an image and sound that reflected progressive, metal and space rock, all with the goal of recreating music that was played from 1968 to 1978. Combined with an eye-catching stage presentation that finds the Imperial Priestess assuming the role of a time-traveling space witch, and what you have is one of the most distinctive bands to not only come out of Australia, but the world. ‘Memoirs of a Rat Queen’ is The Neptune Power Federation’s fourth studio album and first for Cruz Del Sur Music, and was tracked by Jaytanic Ritual at The Pet Food Factory in Marrkville, Sydney. The album is a mélange of various rock genres thrown into one rollicking set of songs that recalls the finer aspects of Queen, Motörhead and T-Rex. The album title is inspired by eight diary entries authored by the Imperial Priestess that detail everything she has lived through, from her role in the French Revolution, being falsely accused of manifesting the Black Plague in medieval Germany, all the way to the time she took a lover in the parking lot outside of a Judas Priest concert in 1986. ‘Memoirs of a Rat Queen’ is a rock and roll spectacle for the ages. The Imperial Priestess has arrived — bow to your knees and repent if you please!
