TELL MAMA

Band:ETTA JAMES
Album:TELL MAMA
Label:BEAR FAMILY
Format:LP
Genre:SOUL/R&B/BLUES

Recognized today as one of the greatest Soul LPs of all time, TELL MAMA hasn't been available on vinyl for more than forty years. Now it's back, lovingly transferred and remastered, and pressed on 180g vinyl. Here's the story. Down in Muscle Shoals, Alabama, Atlantic Records' Jerry Wexler had fallen out with Rick Hall at FAME studio after an Aretha Franklin session ended with Aretha storming back to New York. Wexler later set up the Muscle Shoals session guys in their own studio, Muscle Shoals Sound. Furious at the betrayal, Hall went to see Atlantic's arch-rival, Chess Records, and persuaded Leonard Chess to bring his top Soul acts to FAME. Between August and December 1967, Chess's Etta James, recorded her greatest album, TELL MAMA, at FAME. Etta's career had faltered, and it took the Muscle Shoals sessions to bring her back. The LP's title song, Tell Mama, as well as Otis Redding's Security became Top 40 hits and Top 20 R&B hits for Etta. It was the B-side of Tell Mama that would become the LP's enduring track, though. I'd Rather Go Blind was written by Etta's friend, Fugi Foster, who handed it to her when she went to see him in prison. Although never a charted hit for Etta, this is the original version of a song that has been recorded hundreds of times by artists as diverse as Fleetwood Mac, Rod Stewart, Paolo Nutini, Mick Hucknall, and the Allman Brothers.

THE MYSTERY OF WATERFALLS

Band:NAUTILUS
Album:THE MYSTERY OF WATERFALLS
Label:SIREENA
Format:CD
Genre:PROG ROCK/ELECTRONICA

Nautilus was founded in 1998 as an electronics duo by Martin Ludwig and Ralf Obel, later Guitarist Werner Strätz and ex-GROBSCHNITT member entered the project.  It was Eroc, who produced the title track for the debut CD "Rising Balloon" in the Woodhouse studio and also made a musical contribution. With the third album "Solar Moon" guitarist Strätz became a permanent member of Nautilus. After the CD was voted "best album of the year" by radio legend Winfried Trenkler in 2000, the bsc Music Prudence label signed the band and initially published the re-release of "Solar Moon "and subsequently three other Nautilus albums. After the sampling specialist Ralf Obel stepped down in 2003, the musical concept changed with regard to increased progressive and acoustic elements. With "In Search Of Castaways" (2004), Nautilus was particularly successful in the prog rock scene. In 2008, Nautilus recorded the album "Along the Winding Road" with the new keyboardist Jürgen Dürrbeck. From the beginning, Nautilus wrote their albums based on great novels by the French visionary Jules Verne. With the new album "The Mystery Of Waterfalls", now released after a twelve-year break, the listener accompanies Captain Nemo on his "20,000 miles under the seas" . Musically, newcomer Meiko Richert as a singer in the elegiac longtrack "Point Of Return" adds a new element to the previously purely instrumental concept. Also new are the sometimes escalating twin guitar licks like in "Snowstorm On The Sea". Furthermore, Mellotron choirs like in "Mobilis in Mobile", sparkling sequences, but also melodic guitar pieces like "Summertime" exude a lot of 70s flair and yet sound contemporary or timeless. The musical influences such as Pink Floyd, Tangerine Dream, Mike Oldfield or Wishbone Ash weave Nautilus into an unmistakable style of their own.

DEIN KOPF IST EIN SCHLAFENDES AUTO

Band:ROMAN BUNKA
Album:DEIN KOPF IST EIN SCHLAFENDES AUTO
Label:SIREENA
Format:CD
Genre:PROG ROCK/JAZZ ROCK/KRAUTROCK

"Dein Kopf Ist Ein Schlafendes Auto“ (engl. Your Head is a Sleeping Car) was one of the most interesting German formations of the exciting late 1970s. The album, which bears the title of the band's name, was recorded in 1980 and was released on record the same year. The band presented a unique mix of avantgarde rock, soul, jazz and oriental music. Hardly any other band offered this variety of musical quotes, such breathless ups and downs of incredible sounds and grooves. Roman Bunka and "Dein Kopf Ist Ein Schlafendes Autor" were the cultural ambassadors of that time. In addition to Roman Bunka, the band consisted of Gerald Luciano Hartwig (bass, sitar) and Freddy Setz (drums, piano), who unfortunately died much too early. The band shows their special class on the bonus track of this CD, which was recorded live in 1980.

INFUSION

Band:RUBBER TEA
Album:INFUSION
Label:SIREENA
Format:CD
Genre:PROG ROCK/JAZZ ROCK

Rubber Tea’s "Infusion" is a collection of musical stories and fictional journeys which let the listener escape into the vast world of their own imagination. The manifold album artwork created by David Erzmann perfectly represents the music: Rubber Tea makes use of a wide range of musical instruments – featuring electric and acoustic guitars, fretless bass, vintage synthesizers and organ, saxophone, flute and diverse percussion, amongst others. With the help of several guest musicians the band was able to further expand their sound. It ranges from timeless, dreamy soundscapes (Downstream) to rythmically complex extravaganzas capturing insanity and confusion of recent history (American Dream). Alongside epic organ and guitar solos the concise voice of singer Vanessa Gross tells the most colourful stories, in a way no image or film by themselves ever could. The album rewards the attentive and curious listener with its progressive concept beyond the musical status quo.

SCOPE II

Band:SCOPE
Album:SCOPE II
Label:SIREENA
Format:CD
Genre:PROG ROCK/JAZZ ROCK/FUSION

The predecessor band of SCOPE was called Strange Power and was founded around 1969 in Zwolle / Holland. With the entry of guitarist Rens Nieuwland in 1972, Strange Power became SCOPE. Subsequently, the Dutch jazz rock foursome made a name for itself in both Holland and Germany.

MAMA, HE TREATS YOUR DAUGHTER MEAN

Band:RUTH BROWN
Album:MAMA, HE TREATS YOUR DAUGHTER MEAN
Label:BEAR FAMILY
Format:CD
Genre:RHYTHM & BLUES/ROCK N ROLL

The Queen of Rhythm and Blues This compilation of 30 songs impressively shows the extremely interesting career of Ruth Brown. Starting in the early 1950s, when she sang her way to the top of the R&B charts with her unique voice, which already had a high recognition value at that time, and thus created a solid financial basis for her label Atlantic Records, through the time in the mid 1950s, when she easily made the transition from her rather jazzy style of rhythm and blues to rock 'n' roll and teenage ballads and to early soul sounds, gospel and twist in the early '60s. Bonus tracks, first time on CD: live recordings from the 'Rhythm and Blues Revue' in the mid-50s. These recordings impressively show the atmosphere that captivated the audience at such live concerts! 1-CD with 36-page booklet, 31 tracks. Total playing time approx. 78 min. Ruth Brown s fantastic voice is genre-spanning - here is the proof! Selected songs from Ruth Brown's recording career, first released between 1953 and 1962, are uniquely compiled here. Included are the rare re-recordings of her classics 5-10-15 Hours and Mama, He Treats Your Daughter Mean, which she recorded in 1958 plus: mambo, gospel and soul roots. Three recordings for the US Philips label in the early 1960s can be considered rarities: Walk With Me, Lord, Jim Dandy and Sea Of Love. As a bonus, there are her live recordings from the 'Rhythm And Blues Revue', never before released on CD!
