DEATH'S THRESHOLD

Band:SHADES OF DEEP WATER
Album:DEATH'S THRESHOLD
Label:DUNKELHEIT
Format:LP
Genre:DOOM METAL/DEATH METAL

A cult fixture in the funeral doom scene, SHADES OF DEEP WATER began its exploration of the abyss in 2006. The sole creation of one J.H., the band's ascent/descent has been as steady as his music is slow. From 2007 to 2009, three demos were released in succession and then the Constant Pressure EP in 2012, all before the debut album, Waterways, in 2013. Aptly titled, Waterways suggested the aquatic, abyssal themes SHADES OF DEEP WATER would henceforth explore. From there, J.H. hit a creative streak, with two more EPs following as well as two compilations, such was the demand for his music among ultra-doom afficionados. Now, at long last, arrives SHADES OF DEEP WATER's magnum opus, Death's Threshold. Likewise aptly titled, Death's Threshold is a veritable exploration (and celebration) of his native Finland's rich history in funeral doom and doom-death. Comprising four utterly epic, stretched-across-the-abyss tracks in a vast-yet-focused 41 minutes, here do SHADES OF DEEP WATER drown the listener in physically/spiritually crushing atmosphere, dragging that listener down/down/DOWN under, far below the depths and never to return; the effect is hauntingly hypnotic, and almost comfortingly so. But, as this is strictly (and unapologetically) within the funeral doom pantheon, rest assured that there is no light, no hope, wherever the album roams.

THE HOUR OF THE AVENGER

Band:REVEL IN FLESH
Album:THE HOUR OF THE AVENGER
Label:WAR ANTHEM RECORDS
Format:LP
Genre:Death Metal

The Deathkult rages on and „The hour of the avenger“ draws near! After a succesful line – up change in the drum department and followed by the release of „Relics of the Deathkult“ compilation in early 2018, southern Germany based REVEL IN FLESH finally strike back with their 5th full length album on their new label home WAR ANTHEM Records! „The hour of the avenger“ basically steps in where the highly acclaimed successor album „Emissary of all plagues“ ended. REVEL IN FLESH evolved and refined their very own forumla of Death Metal in a logical way: More EPIC, more MELODIC, more INTENSE but still sticking to their roots deep within the classical European styled Death Metal from the 90ies era. For the first time the drums and vocals were recorded in other studio locations while guitars and bass tracks were still recorded at VAULT M. Studios owned by guitarist Maggesson. For the final mix and mastering process REVEL IN FLESH handled over the final files to their long – time companion Dan Swanö (UNISOUND Studios) for a mix & mastering process. Growing over there years as a union the production of „The hour of the avenger“ marks the most vital one in the bands history thus far!

DOLINE SU OSTALE IZA NAS

Band:BEDNJA
Album:DOLINE SU OSTALE IZA NAS
Label:TRANSCENDING OBSCURITY
Format:CDD
Genre:BLACK METAL/HARDCORE

From Croatia, Bednja are on to something special. Eschewing the stale black metal template, they have taken elements from other genres such as hardcore to concoct an electrifying blend that harnesses the best qualities of each, topped off with an atmospheric touch. The result is not only largely unpredictable but also energetic, with soothing passages interspersing the violently rampaging parts. One word description for Bednja's music would be fascinating but that would hardly sum up the music that is contained on their debut full length. It's an album that you will keep coming back to for more, simply because it's unparalleled in its expression and the way it's stringed together without seeming contrived. Rarely has this blend of black metal and hardcore made this much sense, embracing the atmospheric and spontaneous side of things while being at it too.

THE DEATH OF GAIA

Band:OFFICIUM TRISTE (NETHERLANDS)
Album:THE DEATH OF GAIA
Label:TRANSCENDING OBSCURITY
Format:CDD
Genre:DEATH/DOOM METAL

Dutch death/doom metal legends OFFICIUM TRISTE, who have been around for 25 years, are back with their sixth full length album titled 'The Death of Gaia'. They're only wiser with age, for the music is just as evocative as always if not more this time around, with better arrangements and variations spread across the album. Their music has this gentle yet overwhelming approach that will leave you in complete tatters by the time it's done. It's beautifully hinging on this balance they've perfected over decades between plaintive melodies and wretched heaviness. Additional instruments such as piano, violin and cello have been brought in and even several guest vocals to lend to this an epic air, further entrenching their mastery over this form of poignant music. For this album they've employed the services of Chris Smith (Grey Aria Design Studio) for the vibrant artwork and of Greg Chandler (ESOTERIC) where mastering is concerned, ensuring that everything is done just the way it was meant to be. 'The Death of Gaia' is the pinnacle of the band's illustrious career and sets new standards even now for others to look up to.

HERE THE DEAD LIVE

Band:NOX IRAE (FRANCE)
Album:HERE THE DEAD LIVE
Label:TRANSCENDING OBSCURITY
Format:CDD
Genre:DEATH/THRASH METAL

Members of the legendary French death metal band CATACOMB join forces with members of AFFLICTION GATE to create raw, thrashy death metal dripping with old school fervour and unbridled passion. Members of both the bands bring their trademark elements to the table - the bloodcurdling vocals of AFFLICTION GATE's Herostratos with the brilliant structuring of the CATACOMB veterans when it comes to the creation of this morbid yet delectably catchy mess. This is old school death metal given new expression through the lens of what these bands stood for, without being plainly derivative or sounding old hat. There's palpable tension and rage all through these six compositions and you'll find yourself returning back to these again and again to hopelessly satiate the flesh-tearing itch. NOX IRAE have made a huge statement with their debut EP and one can only expect great things from them in the foreseeable future

LIVE PLANETARIUM

Band:MORTIFICATION
Album:LIVE PLANETARIUM
Label:SOUNDMASS
Format:LP
Genre:THRASH/DEATH/GRIND METAL

Continuing with our release of Mortification albums on VINYL, Soundmass are happy to announce the LP release of their definitive live album Live Planetarium. Recorded in October 1993 at Australia’s iconic Black Stump Festival, Live Planetarium was the fourth Mortification release on Intense Records and their first live album. And what an incredible live show it was, almost flawlessly performed in front of a wild crowd! The set list is a selection of classic songs from their first 3 albums, capturing the diversity of the band’s vision. This is truly Mortification at their greatest, their innovative blend of extreme metal styles setting them apart from the crowd. Their intensity, energy and variation are perfectly captured on this recording – Steve’s thick bass and powerful voice, Michael’s sharp guitar chops and Jayson’s precise drumming – with the incredible production making every instrument clearly heard.

HELLIG USVART

Band:HORDE
Album:HELLIG USVART
Label:SOUNDMASS
Format:CD
Genre:Black Metal

Hellig Usvart – the debut and only studio album recorded by Australian band Horde. Originally released in 1994 by Nuclear Blast, this album created controversy among black metal fans and allegedly saw death threats delivered to Nuclear Blast due to its anti-satanic lyrics. The sole member of the band, Jayson Sherlock, who used the pseudonym Anonymous, is best known as the drummer on the early and classic Mortification albums and later for joining doomsters Paramaecium. Norwegian for “holy unblack”, Hellig Usvart is considered a landmark release, regarded as the first and most ground-breaking Christian (un)black metal album.
